What thickness floor for HF 8x4 ?

Postby CompoSimmonite » Sun Nov 08, 2009 5:00 am

I've got a 8x4 exactly the same as the HF item.
The intention is to make the camper demountable so the trailer can be use as a general hauler, bike & small dinghy transporter etc.
Lack of space means it'll need to be folded when not in use and that's the problem.
The current floor is 18mm Birch ply and very heavy and making one person folding a real maul.
I want to therefore change the floor to thinner ply with hard wearing textured phenolic layer (cheaper than adding "chequer plate" alloy to normal ply). I think in US you call it buffalo board.

What thickness ply do people normally use on these trailer when used as a general purpose hauler ?

Thanks.

That's about normal for an all purpose trailer. That's what I have on mine. If you go lighter, you minimize the usability of the trailer, and run the risk of punching through the floor with something. I think it's much more the strength that is needed rather than the wear factor. Kinda depends on what your hauling needs are. Doug

Thanks.

I've removed the 18mm ply today and find it's still difficult / heavy to fold with ease so have realised the ply doesn't make much difference.
I've a few things I want to try but it looks as if the 18mm ply will be staying :-)
