ASME welder/ fabricator newbie... Hey all!

Postby Doin' Work » Mon Nov 09, 2009 12:35 pm

Hey guys, just stumbled across this forum looking for plans to build a nice tear, and couldn't help but join! You huys have so much information and it seems like a great place to get advice, guidance and tons of tips.

I am 26, have been welding since I was 12 (family business) and on the books since I was 14. I have several ASME certifications and have an extesive background in custom fabrication. I work on motorcycles and high pressure vessels. I TIG, MIG, Pulse Mig and stick weld and would be happy to help anyone with a fab or welding question.

I am primarily a nutjob skier that sleeps in his car and was looking for a comfy albeit minimalist option to stay on the hill. I hike, camp, fish, ski, bike, etc, etc, etc, and am now infatuated with the idea of building my own with ski-specific options galore. I am blown away at the creativity and sheer range of designs shown here and it's an artist and builder's dream to have this much info available! Now the hardest part is deciding what to actually build!

Welcome to the group. I was certified as a level III MT, UT, PT, RT,ET and did a whole lot of weld inspection on everything from the space shuttle to logging equipment. I learned how to weld to put mistakes in so i knew what i was looking at. So it is handy to have as a resource some one who is a welder and knows welding technology :)

A Ski-drop -- how exciting! We'll be wanting lots and lots of build pics. And then the finished product pics, of course.

Welcome aboard!

Welcome! In agreement with everyone else, ask lots of questions! I made some modifications to my design to accomodate my height (6'4") that I now realize I didn't need, but would have benefited with a smidge more clearance for my legs under the interior cabinetry, for instance. I should have built a mock up, and when (or if) I build my second, I will do just that.
God Bless

You are in the right place for building a trailer of any type, I have been around for a couple of years now and am just getting started building, life gets in the way sometimes. I wish you the best of luck with building. In my opinion size matters, Plan well and take your time, so you do not feel like building a 2nd before the 1st one is done. Not that that is a bad thing, Have room for 2 and your gear. Depends on what you tow with, but just about any V6 is capable of towing all tears or Tear Slopes. Lots of people tow with a 4 Cylinder. I have an old toyota with the 22re 4 cyl and I personally would not tow anything with it. It can hardly get out of it's own way. Sounds like lots of insulation will be used in your build. Good luck, take your time and you will enjoy your trailer for years to come. Bill

How about the Must-Ski-Tear? Or maybe Mus-Ski-Tear?? You know, like Mickey Mouse?

Welcome. I'm not a certified welder but through out my life I have been told I am "certifiable". I never realized it was a compliment. I will be interested in hearing your plans since our goals sound similar.
