12 volt distribution panel labels?

Postby ED H. » Tue Nov 10, 2009 9:46 pm

I am using a marine 12v switch/fuse distribution panel for my build. It came pre-wired, and pre-labeled, for a boat! Anchor light, running lights etc, etc. I need custom labels, with white letters on a black background. What have you guys used, that works, and looks good?
I wonder if a good office supply store could do that?

Ed I used the Trial and error method ( sizing and spacing letters ) on word processor of your choice ( or access too ) and sticky-back paper for the printer you have. That is always a good plan to label breakers and or fuses.

Pat

Use plain sheet to setup and size from; then use sticky-back printer paper for the final labels on the panel.

You can buy sheets of stick on tags of various sizes. Most packages will have a link to a program to use with your printer to print as you need

Blue Sea fuse panel

Postby kartvines » Wed Nov 11, 2009 9:04 am

I used a boat Blue Sea fuse panel and then took a Brothers Label Maker and used it to created labels to ID all of the connections, it has been years and so far the looks as if I just added them yesterday, of course my fuse box is in the tongue box so it is not exposed to weather. In fact I added all of my electrical in said tongue box for the same protection.

On a side note: I was really surprise last week end when I replaced the door, that the battery still held a charge, and the last time I took her our was March of this year, and I did not charge her after we got home, so those sealed battery do a great job holding a charge, just thought will provide feedback while I was at it. :applause:

As mentioned, a Brother label maker (or similar) will give you professional looking vinyl labels. I use my P-touch for many things around the house. If you want small metal labels, then a trophy shop is a great idea.

The Brother label maker was my choice also. Not sure if it can do white on black as you mentioned, but the black on white background looks nice. There are other colors of tape available and also a more narrow tape. It can do three different font sizes, upper or lower case, with one or two rows of text. This is an example of one I made recently. It uses the largest font with two rows and all caps. If one row the font gets bigger, or a medium or small font can be selected. Got mine at Staples.

Here's what I did- I went to the local sign shop, thinking that if they couldn't do the job, they would know who could. Sure enough, they took the job. about 25 bucks. Not too bad.
BTW- I made a thin plywood "mock-up" of the finished panel label(s), and even laid out the exact switch spacing and spelling that I wanted. That way, they can answer any questions they may have, themselves. It also greatly reduces the likelyhood of any "mis-interpretation". Thanks to all for your suggestions. I got EXACTLY what I wanted.

trophy shop

Postby eamarquardt » Thu Nov 12, 2009 10:53 am

I'm sure a trophy shop would have done the job for $24.99 and you also would gotten exactly what you wanted for somewhat less!

However, I'm happy that you are happy with the results!!

It's always nice to get exactly what you want. The whole point of building it yourself.

Cheers,

Gus
