We had someone last year that was supposed to be working on putting a "skate" on the front on their bike for the races, but they never showed up.

At least for an upright bike.. I think it might take some work to get it to handle right.

If you could work that out, I am sure it would be faster.

Right now those that are running the best, have a perfect blend of grip and efficiency. If they were stronger to go faster, they would not have enough grip, and if they made the tires grippier, they would not have the horse power to turn it over.

A skate would have a lot less drag.

This is a photo of my studded trail tire.



they are good on the trails.. but are not where near grippy enough for rink ice.

I don't think I have a close up photo of our rink tires.. but I will take one later.

The skis look interesting.. we do have to wait for the trails to freeze up enough so that we don't break through.

They are now using bikes with much bigger tires.. I don't have one yet but it is on my list

Actually the guy that kicked ass last year.. is my co-worker... and he is only a few month younger than I.. he beat all the other kids..

with the ice tires.. we don't need to worry about floatation like we do in the snow. So we used a narrow tire. it is also a rounded profile, so we can lean in and out of the turns better. The only function the tread provides.. is to hold the screws. Coming up with the right thickness tire, combined with the proper screw is part of the trick.

If I remember correctly this tire has 186 screws in it.

We had our first "practice" of the season Thanksgiving night. We had a decent turn out. I got between 14 and 15 miles in.

I learned that my tires are slower than most everybody else's. Years ago, when we race on Bill's farmpond they worked great. The track on his pond was half the size of the hockey rink. so one needed a lot of grip to hold in the turns. Back then I was a bit fitter, and I had the "horsepower" to turn them over.

I was trying to hold pace with others..and I could not do it more than a few laps at a time..

I was curious, wondering how my wife's new tires were working, so I tried it out, and was amazed at how efficient they were.

Then I tried Paul's [my co-worker] while he tried mine, and we both noticed a considerable difference.

Bill made a new faster set. My shoe cleats did not match his pedals, so I could not really push it. He has used smaller lighter tires.. and a very directional stud pattern... but the smaller profile of the tires, leave him hitting his pedals in the turns..

I don't know whether to just copy what I made for my wife.. or try something in between..

Many years back I went on a ride at -20F, that is when I found out you really need to use synthetic lubricants in the freewheel, or it is solid and you cant stop pedaling. I still winter canoe, there are a couple of rivers with enough flow to not freeze completely.
