De-sizing the tires on the trailer

Postby KevinP » Tue Nov 24, 2009 10:31 am

I'm starting to shop for the parts to put my teardrop frame together and one of the issues on the list is to change the size of the wheel/ tire that is on it. First off the wheels that are on it are incorrect. The previous owner had butchered a set of wheels with the small Ford/Dodge bolt pattern (5x 4 1/2) to fit the hubs which are a GM car bolt pattern (5x 4 3/4). :x I also noticed that the tires are pretty good size (225/75/15) and the trailer sits higher than normal. I already did the spring-under-axle and dropped the trailer a couple of inches but it sits too high still. At this point I'm thinking of going to a smaller size tire and possibly some new hubs since the existing ones are pretty much conjoined to the old wheels (don't ask; will exsplain in the build thread when it comes. I found these in Northern Tool the other night and wanted to seeif these would be a good setup for the TD evn though they are made for 3000 lb capacity tralers:

They are 175/80/13 on a 5x 4 1/2 bolt pattern wheel.

Thanks.

I believe those tires are 24" tall and widely used in the light trailer industry...the 225's you presently have are 28"s tall, a 4" diff, giving a 2" shorter net overall height on the camper...here is a tire size calculator to compare tire sizes... http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
