Newbie in Texas

Postby artwebb » Thu Dec 03, 2009 12:28 am

Hi, everybody, I was turned on to this site by a couple members of the Vandwellers forum after expressing interest in small homebuilt travel trailers. I've been a motorhead all my life, done a few stints mechanicing, pushed parts for AutoZone, and now work at a major Grocery store chain. Due to various circumstances, I've never been a major Money maker, so DIY on the cheap is sort of my thing, although sometimes I'm amazed at things I don't think of until someone else does. I also worked as a framer (carpenter's helper) in my younger days (residential construction) so with enough study I can probably do this, and even if I go a different route, I am facinated by the idea of homebuilt campers.

Sounds like you have all the necessary talents to complete what you want...most importantly is the desire to do it. Since you have the ability to "re-invent" yourself to suit the need, I'm sure you can handle a tear build. There's no right or wrong, just build what you want and enjoy it. If you ever think that your neighbors are razzing you....just post some pics here, we'll take care of ya! Doug

PS...there are lots of fellow Texans with builds and finished projects to check out....maybe someone near you will offer up a field trip to see theirs.

Welcome.

We have quite a few Texas members who are very active in the Teardrop lifestyle. A bunch of us are in North Texas, but we have members in Friendswood and Magnolia who are not too far from you. We have a new builder in San Antonio, too.

Thank you everyone for the welcome! I'm actualy thinking in terms of a 'Standie' I believe it's called, as I may just fulltime in this if and when I get it done. I am verry encouraged by the fact that there are many Texas members, as I was a bit apprehensive regarding legality in my beloved home state. (of homebuilts not campers in general) I am heartened to see so many different plans from old Pop Mech articles, too. Anyone ever notice no one does thing themselves anymore? When I was growing up, I remember in the seventies, even, peolpe even doing their own bodywork on the family car, but as time has passed, some will look askance at owning a body hammer and dolly or three
