That kidney shaped table reminds me of my 7Th grade wood shop project back in the early 60's.
Same shape, same legs, just in Mahogany.
Yours is the first I've seen since then. Danny

Wow Danny...you got to do a table?....I only got to do a cutting board in 7th grade, but as a kid riding with mom to pick up my sister at Jr. high, I saw that a number, IE most of the wood shop guys, were doing bowling pin lamps! For me in high school...it was gun racks, but that was in Alaska. Now that I think of it....a bowling pin lamp might just be the perfect thing! Now to find the correct kidney shaped coral colored melmac ash tray. After all....what self respecting early 60's thing wouldn't be complete without that! I have a lot of fun trying to recreate all sorts of lost crap from the past. Doug

It's been a long time Doug.. maybe it was the 8Th grade since I remember building one of those one piece sail boats out of a chunk of 3/4" x about 12" piece of pine first. We bandsawed the rings at an angle and then glued it up. Lots of planing, sanding etc. Made the sails from clear plastic and dowels. Some guys even made wood plank decks. We could choose our own color scheme. I was in the store testing (spray can) the color I was going to use and ended up with a mouth full of blue paint on my teeth. We all took them out to a model boat regatta near San Diego Bay and sailed them. Great fun.

We did the mahogany stack table in 7th grade. Think my folks tossed it when I went off to Cal Poly, but I scored my grandfather's 1932 Delta band saw, 6x48" belt sander, and 4' Delta lathe (just to make you all jealous).

I got the framework for the under bed drawers done, and all the cabinet/drawer fronts made and a lot of painting. Since it was such large piece of flat ply on some of the doors, I thought I'd do up something a little different. Probably not everyone's idea of what they'd do, but I'm the only one that has to camp in it, and I can always make a different door down the road. I'm thinking it will all work.

I put a 15 degree chamfer on the back side of the door edge, drilled out a hole and counter sunk a larger hole in back to hold the piece of the coral Formica. Then routed a couple of grooves and painted them out. Found a late 50's modern/retro handle. Once all the doors are on the galley it will all tie in together, as the black lines will all line up with each other on the rest of the doors. It's all typical late 50's early 60's colors. Now what I really need is about 6 more of the Formica samples. I cleaned out the local Home Depot of the coral boomerang samples they had.

It's kinda fun to not have to worry about wood grain....latex paint hides a ton of flaws. Doug

Thanks all...sometimes when you do something wacky...it doesn't work out. I think this will, some may still be skeptical, I won't have them all done till next weekend. I'll have to install a stick in the grooves so that they all align correctly when I mount the doors, would look funny if they don't. There are some other parts of the picture that aren't quite in place/developed yet as well.

Gage....have at it, I don't mind anyone using my ideas and am honored that someone else might think they are worthwhile. Doug

Meant to ask earlier. Is that Marmoleum that your using for the floor covering?

Yup...and it tends to have a memory, especially on the long narrow pieces running with the grain on the coil. I"m glad I've got the edges captured with aluminum....it wants to curl even after weeks of laying flat. Doug
