2 1/4" square tubing source

Postby Southern Oregon Bob » Thu Nov 03, 2005 10:34 am

I decided after building my frame to do a sliding tongue but I had already used 2 1/2" on the fixed tongue. My local steel sources tell me they make 2 1/4 square thick wall tub but they can't get it from their sources. Does anyone have an online source that might sell 2 1/4x2 1/4x3/16 tubing. I'm getting close to finishing my tear and I put this off hoping I could find the steel I needed when the time came. It would be very dificult at this point to replace my tongue with the correct 2 1/2" reciever tongue. Thanks Bob

Bob, I dont have a source as such BUT I kinked the tube on my boat trailer when I had it in a jacknife position and was looking for some tube to fit inside 3"tube for a repair...I couldn't find it so I went to a local fab shop and had them make some up outta 2 pieces of angle...worked great...might work for you

Thanks Madjack. I've done all my own welding but being a carpenter I'm no expert. When I suggested that to a real welder he thought I would loose alot of strength from all the heat required when welding the entire length twice. Is that something I should worry about? Bob

Hi Bob
don't know where you are in south Oregon but standard steel has an Albany location.and they might ship to locations south . Also they may know a stocking dealer for their products in your neck of the woods.
the toll free # for Oregon is 1-800-452-5550
what you want is 2 1/4 x2 1/4 x.188 ( tube wall is measured in thousands)
its 5.07lb per ft
The difficult we do now... the impossible takes a little longer

Bob I really don't know...I(cut the kinked piece out) took the made piece, inserted into either end then put a piece of angle on each side to even out the space between the cut ends and welded it all up (or a friend welded it up)...it sure came out strong
