LED Exterior Light

Postby bdosborn » Sat Jan 09, 2010 4:04 pm

The teardrop had an LED light in the hatch that was pretty handy at night. The new trailer doesn't have a hatch so I needed some kind of light for the side for reading, finding my beer, etc. I have a porch light converted to a 3W LED star emitter but its set up for area lighting and would probably annoy other campers if I left it on all the time. Unfortunately, I didn't figure out I needed another light until waaaayyyy too late to build something into the side. I think I came up with a slick solution that doesn't require drilling any holes in the trailer.

I found a 7 watt LED strip light on eBay

Made a bracket out of some sheet metal to hang it from the trim on the top of the side:

I put a 12v plug on the end it it and ran it to a 12V outlet in the access hatch below the door. The light has a switch in the cord. You can see from the pattern of light on the garage door that it shines down and out at roughly a 45 degree angle. Hopefully it won't be an annoying glare bomb at night.

The light is pretty warm and doesn't have an annoying blue color. I might have to shield the back of the strip to cut down on some of the glare off the trailer side.

The best part is I can take it all down and pack it away or hang somewhere else (like an EZ Up) if I want too.

Just don't cut the switch off, like I *almost* did. That's where the power supply lives. I wouldn't leave it out in the rain either.
