I contacted Dexter, and they put me in touch with a local distributer. The quote sounds really low, what do you guys think? I pasted the email below.

Just pulled out my receipt from 2005 and mine was $158. What annoyed me was that they charged me $40 for delivery even though I went to the Dexter distributor (about 100mi away) to pick it up. If I knew that they were gonna charge me, I would have just ordered it from a regular retailer near my house.

Prices

Postby eamarquardt » Wed Jan 20, 2010 8:39 pm

The $150 price for the axle seems fair. The $250 price for the brakes seems high unless this is the price for the axle and brakes then it seems low. You can get 10X2 1/4 brake assemblies for $39 and the drum and bearings for $45 so that would be $170 (more or less). Easy to swap out the original hub with the replacement parts if dexter uses standard stuff. Must make sure your axle has the flanges to mount the brakes to.

I'd first try and use this info to negotiate a better price and get the set up you want from one source. Maybe etrailer can get you the dexter axle. I've purchased from them several times and been satisfied. They sent me the wrong stuff a couple of times and when contacted them they sent the right stuff and didn't even want the wrong stuff returned. Good service!

Cheers,

Gus

Hmm,

Reliable wanted over $800 for the same torsion axle, thought maybe I was missing something.

Sounds like a nice price to me. Dexter put you in touch with them, it's not like they are some bogus eBay company. Looks like the quote is for a #9 (Torflex) 1500 pound axle, standard greasing with 5 on 4.5" hubs. The axle with the brakes would have 7" drum brakes installed, that's all that will fit that particular axle. I would imagine you could avoid additional freight by picking up the item at their location if they are nearby. You'd have to go over the exact specifications with them for axle length, overhang, start angle etc. if you order.
What's not to like?

Just looked at my invoice from 12/15/2004 (do I qualify for the "most drawn-out build"?)

#9, 2200# Torflex Idler
545 (6.50 Dia.) 47-60"
Side Mount

Price $167.03

As Rocky pointed out, the shipping is what killed me, at $68.32 to ship from Ft. Worth to Austin.

Total w/ shipping/tax was $254.77
