Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

Postby SteveB » Mon Aug 24, 2009 8:56 pm

Here are some pics of my Airtabs and the table holder I put between the metal box and trailer body on the tongue. I also moved the license plate from under the left rear tail light to the rear door. It looked like it was just waiting to get knocked off or severly bent. The next thing to be done is add a trailer hitch receiver to the rear. This will hold my bike rack.

Here is a pic of my camp site in the high Sierras a couple of weeks ago.

Hope that helps.

Hmm... did they have any 6x10's? Wondering what the going prices are on that model trailer - I really like the lines.

Prem, yes, AirTabs are on the roof too. The campground is called Sherwin Creek a few miles south of Mammoth. One of the really nice places we went is Laurel Lakes. Check out this link. This is the "site" that I'm addicted to.

Kixw2, yes they have (or can make) 6x10's. I went to the actual factory. This place was a square city block. I wanted to buy used but just could not find the condition and configuration I wanted. I found them willing to deal and within easy driving distance. My timing was very fortunate: last day of month and year in 2008.

Where is the factory? I'm in the Long Beach area - I see you're out of Costa Mesa. I'm on the fence about new vs used for a conversion.

I can see why you are addicted to that campsite!!!!! I love going camping in places that are accessable by 4x4 only! That is One of the reasons I did the cargo conversion, they can handle alot more than a regular pop-up!

Added a trailer hitch receiver to the back of my trailer. This way I can take a couple of bikes. The rack hinges down. It seems pretty tight. If it loosens, I will weld the hinge joint to take out some of the vibration. I'm not sure if this is the greatest idea or not. Will just have to see how it works out.

I too just recently had a receiver tube installed on the back of my trailer, to carry a bike rack we already have, or possibly for one of
those rackmount grills. (Freedom Grill?) Seems like we had the same idea.

Are you guys adding the receivers yourself, or having them welded on by a pro, or at a dealership? I ask because I do have a bike rack, and also one of those hitch-mounted cargo racks. Might want to use either of them at some point on the back of the cargo trailer.

 Ha ha ha, this is about the 10th time I've said to myself: I'll pay to have someone else do it becasue this will be the last time and it is cheaper. The answer is, I paid. The good news is that this local guy does really nice work. This hitch is very solid. There is no way it is going to flex.

I must have $2k in welding charges over the last 10 years. I think I really am going to buy a welder and learn to weld.

That would be my first thought too. Pay a pro, get it done right, and don't leave any debris on the highway or in another driver's windshield! :)

There is a pic of the galley on page 1 from my first trip. There are some interior pics on page 3. It is a little hard to get a good idea of the configuration due to the small size of the trailer. The entire 5x8 floor can be used for sleeping. The rear cabinets are raised and the galley does not go below the counter top. I lost some storage space doing it this way but I am happy with the interior space.

I have to eat some humble pie. Several forum members suggested that I prewire the trailer in the event I changed my mind about needing 12v power. A couple of months ago I learned that I have sleep apnea. My breathing machine needs power. I found a good solution for me since I occasionally camp in remote areas and sleep in a tent.
