I got permission to start #2!

Anyway, the hard part is done on paper.

So, the design objectives are:
Inexpensive
High degree of form AND function
did I mention inexpensive?


Why am I doing this? To try some ideas I developed while building #1 and to give me something to play with.

Although I have been toying with making it 5x8, 5x9 and even 5x10, those don't meet the design criteria (think inexpensive).

Profile similar to the generic Benroy



with a slide out counter so the cabinets can go all the way to the back



And doors on the back that swing out, and have flip up countertops to give a net 9' ft of counter.



It's going to be a long, slow ride in the beginning. Come along, it might be fun!

This is as far as I've gotten, but any and all ideas are welcome!

I told her I just had to build another one, or I would never know if my ideas were sound!

Besides, she knows when I have a passion, it's best to get out of the way.

I think I'm gonna build this one for eventual sale. So, I want to do a really good job!

Many of you might have seen this frame before.



I was watching a build journal on the web back in 2008 as this started. It was called the McTear. Well, the builder never finished it, and I have an appointment to go look at it and make an offer tomorrow. There is one guy ahead of me, and if he buys it, then that is what was meant to be. If he doesn't, then my design will change to match this profile!

I built mine with two rear doors that open 180 degrees with flip up counters also. It can be done. I will get you better pictures if you wish. One of the big problems to solve is how to latch them closed and tight. I did it my way and can think of several other ways that would be possible to do.

Wolffarmer, I would love to see some more pictures of your setup! It and one other were major inspirations on the design.

Of course, if I end up picking that welded steel frame, this design will be relegated to #3.

personally the curved roof is a little more appealing than one
with falt plains.
saying that, there are some excellent examples of straight profiles out there.

Haven't seen you mention anything about getting that metal trailer.

I have just posted 2 pages of pics of mine in my album. They might make more sense to go to page 2 and look at them in reverse order to the first pic.

I feel honored mine may have inspired some other trailers. I can't say now if I got my idea from anyone else or what. Might have been a bad dream also. A curved hatch would make it look better true and I probably will on my #2. Getting it dust tight was a challenge but I have worked it out and it is now pretty good. Have never had water get in, or mice. It can be done. Don't expect protection from sun/rain but I like to camp where there are no tables so this has really worked well for me. For me the trade off was worth it. Hatch is also much much lighter.

In case anybody's curious what happened to my planning, I thought I'd let you know...

I'm pretty happy with my weekender, so building this second tear would just be for fun. Then, I'd have to sell it. So, it makes sense to build it 4x8 and spend more time and less money.

But, I want it to be comfortable, so I started playing with a 5x8 option.

I decided it ought to fit me (6'4" tall), so it became a 5x10

Then, I went to the AZ Tearjerkers' Spring Clean last weekend, and started dreaming of something I could stand up in...

So now I have 5 different designs going on paper.

I'll settle on something sooner or later...
