NEWBEE FROM NEVADA JUST BOUGHT A CARGO TRAILER TO CONVERT

Postby chukar » Fri Jan 29, 2010 1:30 pm

Hi;
My wife and I just bought a new Cargo that I will be converting into a camper/toyhauler (for our Rhino). We live in rural northern Nevada.

We have dry camped for over 30 years starting with tents and selling our 3rd Pop-up just a few months ago. Most of our camping is done in central and northern Nevada with Oregon and Idaho mixed in for good measure. We have stayed in established campgrounds only a handful of times. We are leaving the pop-ups for the Cargo because of the ease of set-up and take down as well as being able to take the Side by Side when we go Chukar hunting or exploring.

We are so happy we found this forum! What a wealth of ideas!

Here is what we are starting with:

The photo above shows my first "mod". 2 coats of porch paint with grit. The Rhino is inside to measure for the flush mounted heavy duty tie downs.

The Specs:

7X14 Carry-on Cargo Trailer
tandem axles (3500 lb each)
2500 pounds dry weight. (7000GVW)
RV side door
Rear Jacks
¾ inch plywood floor and walls
6 feet 6 inches tall and wide inside

Hi Jim,

Welcome to T&TTT. :)

Nice CT you've got there. I know you'll enjoy converting it to your needs. As Mandy stated, post pics of your progress. I'll be converting a 6X12 for Camping/Tailgating later, but must complete my TD first.

Enjoy the forum,
Mike

The Deepest spot in Lake Superior, the largest of the Great Lakes is 1,333 feet or about 222 fathoms. This profound depth could easily contain the entire 1,250' Empire State Building, even with a 50-foot-tall King Kong perched atop.

Welcome aboard Jim. I am from Winnemucca, so I bet we are not that far apart in distance. Heck we might even know each other. Good luck with your conversion.

Hi Jim. I'm looking forward to your build.

Some day I'd like to take my sons camping in our trailer conversion in the Nevada desert but I'm on the wrong side of the country. Once you get it built maybe we can trade for a week!

Hi Jim, welcome to the best informationational site on the internet....(is that a word?). I am impressed with the ideas of cargo trailer owners, and it makes me even want to go out and get one and see what can be done to make it a dual camping unit, comfortable enough to sleep in and also be able to haul the toys that make for happy camping in areas that are not designed to accomidate the "normal", sit-around-the-campfire campers.

As an old timer, I had never heard of a "Rhino" and I checked it out on Google....... WOW, is it true, that when in 4 wheel drive at 3 miles an hour, while turning, a sudden punch of the gas peddle, will flop it over on it's side due to the narrow spacing of the wheels? I guess those that own one, must be aware of how they should be driven and take care to not to do the side-flop, that seems to be a problem with those who don't know how to handle them.

They look like a fun machine, and if you can design a way to haul it to the "fun area", and also have a place to sleep, store your gear along with your cooking needs, it looks like you are on the right track. Keep us up to date on your progress, and post those those pice.....we love pics.

8) ;) Roly

Thanx once again everyone!
:D :D
I am a little more than 2 hours west of Winnemucca btw Stagecoach and Dayton. I will be heading somewhere btw here and Winnemucca today to do a little Chukar hunting before the season ends on Super Sunday.

Hey Digi; contrary to popular belief northern Nevada is not what I would call desert. It is the most mountainous state:
“Nevada has more than 300 named mountain ranges, all running north-south as part of the Great Basin complex.. The state has the most number of peaks above 10,000 feet.
The highest peaks are in the White Mountains, near Mount Whitney, the highest point in the Lower 48 states, with Boundary Peak (13,145 feet); and Wheeler Peak (13,063 feet) in Great Basin National Park, near the Utah border to the northeast.â€

Hey rural, so are we. We are in Lovelock. What's between Stagecoach and Dayton? I assume just you and a few other souls! Welcome to a fellow 2AA region person! We have a teardrop rather than a cargo conversion, but we are all TTTers. Have fun with your build and hope to see you around. Although there are not many cargo converts there, I highly recommend you head on out to the Austin gathering coming up in April to meet some of the people on this board. Have fun ! :applause:

There is actually a lot more btw Dayton and Stagecoach now than when we moved here. We even have a new Maverick gas Station.

Really Nice Rig you have there! Just looking at your album....where would we get more info on the Austin get together? is there a link?

We also just became donating members. Have learned more than the $32 already.

thanx, Jim
