We are in Snow and More Snow - Also Pack Ice in Gulf

Postby Classic Finn » Sun Jan 31, 2010 9:43 am

Weve been hit with more snow this winter than the previous.

Our entire family spent 4 hours shoveling out this morning. More snow expected. Also there is no room to put it anyplace.

Here it is from Finnish News.

Also Pack ice is giving shipping traffic a lot of trouble. worst in 7 years.

Sounds like fun - not! We have had very little in the overall Scheme of things here!

On the bright side, it gave you some family bonding time! :)

:o Wow Heikki, don't get out in that cold and get sick. It is a good thing ice breakers can get to the ships. I remember many years ago when Russian ships got stuck in the Bering Sea! The ice almost broke them up.....

The sooner summer gets here the better. :worship:

Im set for summer already for sure. Just bout had enough of this snow and ice here. The snow at the moment is equal to the height of our car.
Thats how high the shoveled snow is.

According to the news there are bout 10 ships literally stuck and waiting for the ice breakers to come in and assist. Weve got 4 in total working round the clock. Id love to be onboard because the pay is excellent. ;)

Have the chills at present. Warming up the Sauna to get warmed up.

Icebreaker Frees Stranded Ferry

Icebreakers are working to clear the water

An Icebreaker assisted by two tugs has freed an Eckerö Line ferry that got stuck in the ice half an hour after leaving Helsinki Friday morning. The vessel with almost 850 passengers onboard arrived in Tallinn over seven hours late.

The ferry is will also be helped by icebreakers during its evening return trip to Helsinki, if necessary.

Eckerö Line said the passengers were not in any danger and were offered food and beverages. The company says it does not expect the Nordlandia ferry travel will face difficulties in the coming days.

It never dawned on me that Finnish ferries run in ice pack thick enough to get stuck. The marine engineering and government regulations that govern ferries that run ice pack has to be mind boggling

Ohh yes its not uncommon. I,ll dig up my photos from the ship I worked on. Nothing but ice and onboard deck as well. Plus having life saving drills in this same weather once or twice a week.

Thank god majority of the ferries nowadays are Ice Class..few of them still are not however.

I feel your pain.

I know what you mean. I'm a warm weather person myself. It's hard for me to enjoy fall because I know what's coming. Every winter, I keep threatening to move someplace warmer like out west. I would not miss winter at all. Here's hoping for warmer weather soon!!! :worship:
Have a great day and hoping the weather is great no matter where you are!!!

Signed, Me
