HELP..Need info California frame bulid

Postby Olguy » Wed Feb 03, 2010 8:17 pm

Help Please. Is there some type of laws in California (L.A.) that prevent buliding your own trailer? I attempted to purchase a rubber torx axle only to be informed to ck with local codes in Cal. and have it sent to a licenced trailer bulider. WHAT? :x
I am using 1 1/2 x 2 for the framing and support and 2 1/2 x 21/2 for tonuge. Trailer is 5 x 10. I was attempting to purchase a 2000 lb torx flex axle from Northern tool. :?
Any idea or information on this PHOO-PHOO??

BS, plenty of folks here in Cali built there oun frames. I think the codes they are refering is state specs on what it should be here in Cali. Call DMV, they should answer any questions

Registering in California

Postby eamarquardt » Wed Feb 03, 2010 10:27 pm

I built a dump trailer (see album) from scratch. Took it to the DMV and believe it or not it was one of my less painful experiences with them. Once they got over the fact it had started life as a bunch of purchased parts and steel they assigned it a serial number (or something), put a sticker with that number on it, and gave me (after an exchange of MONEY) permanent plates (no renewal required).

Unbelievable.

Cheers,

Gus

Olguy,

One of two things......

The employee you talked to is clue less or
they just don't want to deal with walk up customers.

I did have to go to a second vendor before I found an employee that knew what they were doing when it comes to ordering a custom axle. No real problem after that.

I agree. I've used Century Wheel and Rim several times and their prices seem to be pretty fair. They've always taken Suzy's money (even if I spend it, she considers it her money) without question.

How does one become a "licensed trailer builder"? He was definately blowing some smoke up somewhere on your anatomy!

Be sure to have your rims in hand before ordering you axle. You need to know their offset so you order your axle the right width to have things work out right.

I looked at the DMV checklist posted my MK10108. There is an item on the checklist about the lights. My DMV didn't take any notice of the lights and I didn't have to get them "certified" by anyone.

Cheers,

Gus

Got to love living in a state like Oregon. As long as your "multi-purpose" utility trailer has a GVW of under 1800 lbs, no title, no registration, no DMV hassles, just hook it up and tow it (assuming it meets the DOT requirements).

What do you do if you camped outside of Oregon?

Postby Olguy » Thu Feb 04, 2010 11:45 pm

Thanks all for the comments. I am sure the guy was either lacking in knowledge or just did not care at all. Yea the tire issue is the prob. Im not sure if I want to go with plys or radial and if I want an old skool look with 3 inch white walls (match the vehicle) or if I want more modern look.
Going with a 5 x 41/2 hub. Not sure on off set. Prob 6.5 to 7 wide.
Hey, any Ideas on best set up??? :worship: Im all ears... . well except the wifes favorite part................ My wallet.....

Dan, To the best of knowledge you only have to met the rules of your home state (the state your tow vehicle is registered in). I've been towing them in many other states for years without any problems.

Kind of sounds like the person that told you that may be a new employee. If you read the packaging on most anything that might be used in building a trailer, it probably has a disclaimer on it, saying something to the affect of checking with your local regulations...
If I could shut my brain off, I could save myself alot of time, money and effort.
