Anyone have a job opening?

Postby ssrjim » Sun Feb 07, 2010 11:59 am

Only three month’s left to work. RIF’d Reduction in workforce.

Worse part I have 29 years and it takes 30 for full retirement. Plus I think I’m a little young to be retired.

Started as a shop teacher, they killed the program. Taught computers and technology, they killed the program. Took and passed the tests to be a Library Media Specialist, and the position goes away at the end of the school year.

I guess it is not important to use tools and be able to think and problem solve. Don’t need computer skills. Research library skills are not important. It is all about the test, the 3R’s.

Something is out of whack.

Anyone have a job opening?

Good thing I see the irony in your statement. In our world our students really need computer skills! And quite frankly shop students need them as much or more than others.

How many skilled labor jobs, that use shop skills,,,now use computers!!! How many need a lot of the skills your jobs have thrown away.......

Wish I had a job. You might try to negotiate your last year. There are times and contracts where if it looks like an older employee is being bumped this can be an issue to keep both the job and the retirement.

Jobwise, things are going to hell in a handbasket... and there's no quick recovery in sight. I wish I had a good answer for you... but unfortunately I don't.

I do know that some of the guys I used to work with have had to relocate out of state in order to find work. Michigan has a 21.5% unemployment rate.

There are jobs out there, but they are far and few inbetween... if you are not ready to retire, then you may want to plan on relocating.

Sorry...

The place I was working knew what the job climate was like and are willing to take full advantage of it. They are going thru people (myself included) like I can't believe, it's like a revolving door. I have a feeling that they are getting rid of the senior guys and replacing us with lower level (cheaper) junior technicians.

Even though both my wife and I have been unemployed in the last few years, we weren't unemployed at the same time. Luckily, she is still employed and is doing quite well at her new company. She took advantage of her unemployment and got her MBA. It allowed her to get a higher position than where she was before she got RIFd, I'm so proud of her.

Obviously, people are all the same, with the same talents, and there will only be a few narrow career paths in the future, so why bother with a broad-based education?

And if it isn't on the "test," you'll never need it in life. Right?

So, cut programs. Cut costs. Cut taxes. Cut, cut, cut.

But don't you dare cut the football program.

At 29 years in, you may have to get creative. Can you drive a bus or push a broom for a year and get your retirement?

No Football

Postby ssrjim » Sun Feb 07, 2010 7:33 pm

We are a K-8 district, no sports. We have 13 schools and about 50 of us bumped. Each job opening if we have any will be very tight.

things aren't going to get better any time soon either. you have the executive and legislative branches of your government taking a wrecking ball to the private sector.

I'm convinced that the ONLY chance that this country has is to get some fiscally responsible people in the house and senate ASAP. Put that last budget through the shredder ... if I spent like that, I'd be in prison.

C'mon congress ... STOP THE SPENDING -- YESTERDAY

Hopefully you are in a Union. You might seriously watch and be sure those folks who have the longest time have the first chance at a job.............

The tighter things get the more you need to stand as a unit!

I don't like unions and I won't take a union job. I prefer the idea of advancement based on merit rather than seniority. in my trade that would mean I'd have to stick with the same company to get the seniority too and if I had done that I wouldn't have a quarter of the skills I do now. some people like the idea of security but in reality, the skills I've gained give me more security than seniority would.
