Some Serious Carp Going On

Feds pass on surest solution to Asian carp advance

Bighead and silver carp — both native to Asia — have been migrating toward the [Great Lakes] since escaping from Deep South fish ponds and sewage treatment plants in the 1970s. The biggest can reach 100 pounds and 4 feet long, consuming up to 40 percent of their body weight daily in plankton, the base of the aquatic food chain. Once established in the lakes, the carp could starve out the prey fish on which popular species such as salmon and whitefish depend.

The carp have already infested parts of the Mississippi and Illinois rivers, driving away many native fish.

Silver carp are known to hurtle from the water at the sound of passing motors and slam into boaters with bone-breaking force.

Let me get this straight... not only does the migration of asian Carp pose a threat to the Great Lakes' ecosystem and the region's fishing economy... but boaters could risk injury from flying Carp, too?

:scratchthinking:

In Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio, there is a lake called Pymatuning that splits the boarder. There is a causeway that splits the lake in half. In the middle of the causeway there is a spillway where water flows from one side of the lake to another. The carp population is so heavy the ducks can walk on their backs. I don't think these are the same carp discussed earlier, but they are carp nontheless.

There is a Tearjerkers gathering near there later this year (Buckeye & Liberty Bell) at Jamestown, PA. If anyone is attending, this is a must see.

This is called the Pymatuning Spillway.

We have a couple of lakes that are invaded by goldfish. People used to use goldfish for catfishing thats how they got introduced into the lakes. Now its a $2000.00 fine if anybody is caught using goldfish as bait.

Heaven forbid that they close the locks into the Great Lakes and discomode some shipping.
It may already be too late Asian Carp DNA has been found in Lake Erie, and its not like they have not known it was coming for years. Govenors from a number of the GL states have or will go to Washington to plead our case.

I think those carp are prime candidates for redneck fishing -- you know, with TNT.

I do a lot of fishing on the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, but I haven't seen any of the flying carp yet.
