Exercise Anyone?????????????

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Beccaaaaaaaa where are youuuuuuuu???

Well my regular exercise partners are starting to get scarce.

Laurie and I went out to do the trail we did last Thursday. This time we wore slip on grippers for the bottom of our shoes... but this time it had been so warm out the snow was soft.. so there were places we kept sinking in...  It was still a lot of work. Firm snow would be faster.. We were still able to take 8 minutes off our fastest time.

Sometimes she rides the thing while I'm on the computer, and she's asking question about how hard might be too hard, what pulse she should be achieving, etc. People who aren't interested in fitness don't ask those sort of questions. Today I explained Percieved Rate of Exertion to her, which is what I use, rather than fool with pesky pulse taking.
She asked about the pulse meters they sell, since I don't believe the one that came with the Stride cycle is at all accurate. It says my pulse rate is 65-73 during exercise, whereas I know for a fact it's more like 85 resting. Probably will look into a pulse meter for her as I'd like to see her stay around 125 BPM at this time, so as not to overstrain her heart.

That's great Art. Yeah it sounds like your wife is exercising.. :D

The chest strap pulse monitors are more accurate... but I am surprised that the one of your Stride Cycle is that inaccurate.

Actualy I watched it and compared what I saw to her breathing today, and for her it seems to be accurate. Maybe becuase I'm standing up I'm not getting good contact with my hands on the sensors. (she rides it like a bike) so maybe that's it.
My usual fifteen and stretching today (have been stretching, just not saying so on post) tomorow I test

their inaccuracy is often the way it samples.. and averages... generally it is ok.

the better chest belts read the electrical pulse from the heart.. they are EKG accurate.

Years ago.. I had one that clipped to my earlobe... every time I stood to hammer up a hill [cycling] according to the monitor my pulse rate was dropping significantly..

The only thing I could think of.. is that my legs were using enough blood, there was not enough pulse left in my ears.. for it to read

So does 45+ min a day on my Wii Fit count as real exercise, I really love that thing we got it for Christmas and I never would have bet you could work up a sweat on a video game. I have since added wrist weights and ankle weights. It's to where I can't wait to do my workout every day.

  :CC

I read once that wii tennis only burns one calorie more than a pure video game...

I did not say if it was one for the whole game.. one more an hour.. I am not sure.. but it sure did not sound right.

I am not real familiar with the wii or all that it offers.. but I have done the boxing once.. it was a good pretty good work out for me... but I did not know how to use it and moved more than I think I needed to..

It sounds like it is working for you.

I work at a place that sells fitness equipment.. and people will often ask what piece is the best.. what will give you the best workout.

the one that works the best.. is the one you will use.

I have been contemplating a wii. I will have to check them out.. 8)

Some of the exercises took getting used to like the step and the rhythm boxing I couldn't stay in step for anything when I started now it's no trouble keeping up.

The wii fit is a lot different than the wii sport. I'll be the first to admit that I'd prefer working out with weights but with 2 five year olds and little time the gym is out.

I've become a self promoter of the Wii Fit  It's amazing and has motivated us to get up and get to exercising.

Okay, I'm verry dissapointed. I went to test today, see if any inprovement has occured.
I never tested running/ walking when I started exercising, but I was able to walk from my home to my job and back in about 45 mins. According to the odometer in my car this as 2.3 miles, my Dakota, (which I believe has non stock size tires) says it's 2.5 miles, so about 22.5 min miles. Today I'm testing on an official track, I'm on my last lap, and I see that, running and walking, I'm at 35 mins, and not even finnished with the mile!
Got so disgusted I (a) left the track without finnishing (b) double checked the mileage to work and back with the car's odometer.

According to my math it takes 8 laps around a 220 yd track to make a mile, right?
And cardio should IMPROVE my time, right? what happened?

At least I did see increase in my strenth work, I doubled supine pullups and nearly doubled pushups from my initial test. (all other exercises key off these two, so that's a similar increase in all exercises)

Next week I step up to two sets, although at less than max reps, so I'm happy with that, but other than the fact that my eliptical seems to be helping correct my tendacy to overstride, how did I go from 22.5 min mile four weeks ago to over 35 min mile tonight?

I took a couple of "sick days" this week, and ended up doing the final workout of stage 4 on Friday instead of Wednesday.
Today, I decided to walk...I had some errands to run first, two banks, post office, etc, and just kept walking. Ended up doing 5 miles!

well my math agrees that 8x around a 220 yard track..is a mile... is the track 220 yards?

I would not trust a car odometer.. for measuring distance in that way.
I would think cardio would take time to improve. Also while any cardio is of some benefit.. In order to get faster at walking.. you would want to be walking for exercise.

In the past I have been quite fit from cycling.. but unless I am walking.. I would get tired doing much of any of that. A trip to Bar Harbor walking around town.. shopping etc.. and would hurt.

It all takes time.. be patient. Your imediate strength gains..is more a factor of a better nerve impulse.. and a firing of more of your muscle vs much for muscle growth.. you can do more work.. but it is unlikely you have grown much new muscle yet.

Patience.. forward motion.. no matter how slow.. is better than backward motion..

Yeah I knew about nerve inpulse inprovement over actual muscle mass, but stronger is stronger, and I'm happy my muscles are improving in strength no matter why.
The track is an official track and feild competition track, surrounding a football feild. If I remember correctly a regulation track is 220 yards around.
Just remembered something. track events are done in meters and kilometers now. wonder if that makes a difference. I know a meter is sort of close to a yard, but maybe not quite the same.
Have to look in to that. I know all car odometers are a little off, but how far off could they be? I mean, there is a .2 mile discrepancy between the two cars, but I'm resonably certain the tires on the Dakota are smaller diameter than stock. They're 70's, and the original tires were 75's.
Anyway, don't mean to sound argumentative, just doesn't make much sense to me. 15 more mins would mean the odometers were off by a LOT, to the point it would be noticable in indicated speed, I would think.

I am just trying to get you feel not so disapointed and discouraged.

In the strength part.. whether nerve impuse.. or muscle growth.. stronger is stronger, I agree 100%. All I was trying to say there was... even though stronger.... what changed there.. is easier.. faster to change, than cardio improvement.

My motorcycle as it comes from the factory is off 7%

As I said .. or was trying to say.. if you are going to test yourself with walking.. your exercise should include walking. Is there anyway to test yourself on your new piece of equipment?

There are also any number of reasons one could have an off day.

I am still not up to snuff.. tired today. We were gone most of the day.. and I was debating.. passing on a workout.. or doing something... watching some exercises on you tube inspired me enough. :D

I did 15min. of continuous KB Turkish getups with my 55# It took a bit of focus the last few minutes.. to keep the KB steady.

I did a couple of sets of halo's with my 45#.. and some isometric holds with the 55#

my hands and forearms seem to be my limiting factor right now.

Just a little while ago a 35# KB was my biggest.. I had done some get ups with with 40# and 50# dumbells.. They don't tax the wrist like the KB's do.

It might be some time before I am ready for my 75#
