Postby scaramoche » Mon Feb 22, 2010 9:40 pm

Hi all im grinding away on my td, but i just thought of something. My 4x8 harbor freight trailer doesnt need to be registered, but what about when im done with my TD?
I will have lights and such, but im not sure about licence plate aka registering? It doesnt have a "vin" that i can find.

thanks

It would depend on the law in the state you live in.

I would for two reasons....

1. You would have a title with the VIN #s registered with the state. Just in case, heaven forbid, that it's stolen. Also, might be a selling point in the future, especially to an out of state buyer.

2. Out of state.... having a tag would decrease the possibility of LEO pulling you over if you tow through a state that does require it.

But that's just my 2 1/2 cents worth.

It may not have a VIN that you see, but your trailer did come with a Certificate of Origin - kind of looks like a title. That paper is all you need (and some $$) to take to the DMV to get a Title and registration.

On both of my 1175# HF trailers had a "VIN" tag attached on one of the "A" frame members that form the tongue. One several years old and one brand new.

In Ohio at least I just used the Certificate of Origin to get my plates.

A way around it would be to register it as a home built trailer, then the state will issue you a vin# Depends on the state if this will work. I registered my 5x9 utility trailer and had tags and a plate before I ever started building it. I just had to declair an estimate of what I had vested in it, color, and rough deminsions to the revenue office (I live in Arkansas). I just declaired $200 vested, ($0 tax value) and was set.

The only reason I still don't have tags for my tear is that I haven't picked a color yet.
