Remote Controlled LED Lighting

Postby absolutsnwbrdr » Fri Feb 26, 2010 1:19 pm

I'm not sure if anyone has done this before, but I just ordered a 2 channel RF remote relay switch. My idea behind this is instead of having hardwired switches, I will just have 2 remote fobs. I selected a 2-channel RF module so I could have one channel for the interior/galley lights, and the other channel for the exterior lights. It claims to have a 100 meter range, so I can control the lights from beside the campfire! I also plan on having mounting spots for the fobs on the inside of the trailer. I don't need a lot of lighting, so I only ordered a few small LED pods.

and 4 of these for exterior (2 blue, 2 green):

I have a plan for the pods on the exterior.... meaning they arent just going to be stuck to the outside.... there will be something to give them a finished look.

Just ordered everything today, so we'll see how this turns out when everything gets here!

Shouldnt be too complicated.... heres a wire-out diagram for the RF module...

Image

The LED pods that I ordered say to wire them in parallel, so after that is taken care of, its just a matter of running +/- to the module, and connecting the lights to their respective channels.... 3 interior pods on one channel, and the 4 exterior pods on the other channel. The website for the RF module says that the working mode for the unit I got is "toggle" so each time you push button A, it will toggle channel 1 on or off. Same goes for button B and channel 2.

I will probably make channel 1 (button A) the exterior lights, and channel 2 (button B) the interior lights.

Bought one of these on clearance I think it was like $15. I got it a couple years ago to remotely operate my "hover system" because it's kind of a pain to turn on. I never got around to hooking it up though.

haha j/k!

I'm looking forward to getting it in the mail and testing it. Hopefully it works as I intend it to!

Oh !

I thought you were going for a "Hoover " system.

I guess a central vacuum system was a bit over the top for even the most tricked out teardrop ! :rofl2:

The misses is prodding me. Just how did you do your hover system? She thinks that it would be an awesome night light for bathroom trips.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons why I did it. Makes it easier to find your way back to the campsite in the dark. The other reason is because the tear looks like a spaceship, what spaceship doesn't float.

It is an undercar LED kit for those ricer cars, ala Fast and Furious. BTW: that movie ruined the import scene and not all imports are ricers. If you go on eBay you can find tons of them on there in all kinds of colors, a kit runs about $50. Be careful to check the shipping if you buy from eBay, some had really low prices like $10 but shipping cost $50.

The kit has weatherproof tubes that house the LEDs. You just clamp the tubes underneath. They all connect to a control box that connects to power. This control box also allows you to make them flash and chase, I just leave it on. The old kits used neon tubes, kinda fragile and will probably drain your battery.

I gave a kit to Bluebonnet, I'm still waiting to see it.

You're not the only one who was wondering. (stole this pic from Jeanette "jmtk")

Some how the prospect of a remote controlled anything brings to mind the experience with our Dish network DVR control. Some one else in our neighborhood was on the same frequency and our channel would change unexpectedly and their taste in programs was not ours. The remote was reprogrammed and we no longer have the problem.

Parts left out don't go wrong, and ya better have an off switch some place. ;)

Well I have good news and bad news....

The good news... my LED's came yesterday and look great!

The bad news.... I'm an idiot. I was just browsing the website that I ordered my remote control unit from, and realized I ordered one that works on 110-240VAC. They do have one that works on 12VDC @ 415MHz, so I'm going to order that one and see if they have shipped out my previous order yet.

So here's the unit that I need...

I looked at that remote unit on ebay, and it said it only had a range of 22 feet??

I contacted the company about the unit I ordered, and they claim that the one that I ordered will in fact work on 12VDC. It just got here yesterday, so I'll give it a shot this weekend.
