Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

Postby SirJoey » Sun Feb 28, 2010 6:38 pm

I don't normally do stuff on Sunday, but during the wiring stage, I have
to work around my brother's schedule, which unfortunately, means Sunday.

Ceiling insulated:

All AC wiring finally finished! YEE-HAH! :dancing

Opened up both walls, removed both chassis grounds, & ran
seperate ground wires for each outlet, & one for air con,
all the way back to ground on the motorbase receptacle inlet.
I just PRAY this is the LAST DARN TIME I have to take the walls apart!

As expected, finishing the ceiling without help was a royal pain,
but I finally managed to "git 'er done"!
...and thank Heaven for self-drilling screws!

The ceiling light will be centered when it gets wired up. Right now,
it's just swung over to the side on one screw, so the remaining
screws can hold my backing block in place. The second wire there
is for daisy-chaining to a reading light above my bed.

Can't finish my 12 volt wiring, cuz I don't have a battery or
charger yet, but the wires are in place. I guess my next step
will be to replace all my trim pieces & paint the walls.

Bought one of those 110-volt electrical circuit testers today, too.
Plugged the ac cord into the trailer, & plugged the tester into the outlets.
Everything tested out correct, so hopefully, I'm good to go on the 110 stuff!

:)

Looking Good. You could always use jumper cables (or a wire to the TV battery) to test the 12V.

Thanx, man! Yeah, I may do that, but I'm expecting to order
my battery & charger pretty soon anyway, so I may just wait.

Can't decide whether to paint or stain the walls. There's a lotta pretty grain there,
so staining would look MUCH nicer, IMO, but I already have paint. Anyone have any idea
how much stain & polyurethane it would take to do these 3 walls, & how much it would cost?

Due to budget limitations, I've decided to go with what I have on hand, which is paint.
Slapped on a coat of Killz primer today. Figured I better, if I'm gonna paint it white,
since I had some pretty serious dark places on the wood, from my days of actually hauling
cargo in it. If the weather holds up, I hope to do the actual painting on Monday.

I was wondering how you'll be filling in the gap between ceiling and walls -- unless someone makes trim pieces that fit that rounded shape? (Maybe I should have paid attention when others were doing the same thing.)

I have to admit I'm envious of your meat-locker roof A/C -- I'd like to have done something similar but then my trailer wouldn't have fit in my garage.

I also want to say, your avatar cracks me up every time I see it. Thanks. -Gary

They make moldings which are very flexable; so much that you could tie a knot in them

Gary, the one at the front end is definitely not gonna get covered, cuz being fibreglass, it's a good source of light. The ones on the sides, I haven't decided yet for sure. I may just leave them alone as well, cuz when the wall trim is on, they make real nice little pockets to stash all kinds of stuff in. If I do decide to cover 'em, naturally, I'll insulate 'em first.

The AC.... I'd have liked to have gotten something smaller, but I got a pretty good deal on that one, so I jumped on it. I don't have a garage or storage building, so height is a non-issue for me.

Avatar... hey, I'm just an ol' English dog...
Hard to see in the pic, but "I" am wearing a monocle, cuz we're sophisticated, HI-CLASS ol' dogs around here! :laughter:

After 1 coat of Killz primer, & 1 coat of paint, coverage was less
than spectacular. It's actually much worse than it looks in the pic.
Looks like I'm gonna be painting it a THIRD time!
:(

Image

Please, just give me one more day of nice weather, so I can at least finish the painting! :worship:

Counting the primer, this makes 3 coats total. Coverage is finally passable. Not
perfect, but not bad. Although one more coat would probably yield perfect, 100%
coverage, I'm not going for perfection, & I'm certainly not painting it all a 4th
time to get there, either! It's good enough for the girls I go with...

Got my ceiling light wired, metal corner trims stapled back in
place, replaced outlet covers, TV cable hookups, & window screens.

Next comes replacement of the wall trim pieces, which I painted seperately, & are ready to go back on.
Took the plunge a couple nights ago, & ordered a battery & Battery Tender, too. Hopin' they arrive by this weekend!

nice job

I know its to late now but if you have the paint another coat could't hurt.

I have been rounding up tools for my conversion when and if I order the trailer.

I don't own many wood working tools I was an electrician and I have since forgotten most of that.

maybe I will make up my mind soon I need a new wash & dryer and a refridgerator that will take a lot of cash but first things first.

Thanx, Pete. I don't own many woodworking tools either. I'm an ex-journeyman machinist & a mediocre welder,
but I'm no carpenter by any stretch, so my wall unit, cabinets, shelves & bed will prolly give everyone a good laugh!

If I could spare the money, I'd pay a carpenter to build them for me,
cuz I'm afraid this thing's gonna look like Hell on wheels.

It looks to nice to look like junk so forget that

I'm sure there are some who will have far more skills than I when the time comes to build, insulate, paint ect

but it will be mine and I only have to please myself.

I just turned 68 and my brother is 70 and he is the one I will lean on for any carpentery skills I am lacking.

Replaced all wall trim pieces & first set of blinds:

Also, made up a little "dogbone" for connecting to my GFCI/Breaker:

Flooring comes next, but I still have to pick up some linoleum or self-stick tiles.
From what I've read, the tiles seem to be cheaper & easier to work with. We'll see...

With rain yesterday & today, work has come to a grinding halt.
In the meantime though, more "goodies" arrived!
