I favor Amsoil, higher heat tolerance, lower pour point (works better in cold temperatures), slipperier (less resistance/better mileage). The illustration I used was from http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/glb.aspx.
Subaru # 10 is sitting in the drive with 287,000 miles and has had syn since it had 10,000.

Thank you I'll look for it
Next question
you said

plan on replacing the bearings seals and if they are present, races.

Is there different sizes, how will I know what I need? And what are races?

I'd like to go ahead and get the stuff before I pull it out of storage in a couple weeks

Races/cones sit on the axle and are what the bearing rotate around.

If you know what axle it is then you can/ may be able to pre buy. There are different sizes and some bearings run on the axle and others have a race/cone that fits over the axle that is replaceable e.g. Dexter. If you see pitting or chips remedial action will need to be taken (Ya gotta fix it).

???????????????

Every rear wheel drive car I ever packed bearings in the races were installed in the hubs. I know the harbor freight frames I have , the races are in the hubs and the 5x8 utility they are in the hubs. I have never seen the race pressed onto the axle is this something dexter does???

Bearings are identified by a number stamped into the bearing center hub simply remove inner and outer bearings and take them to an automotive supply house or an industrial bearing supply house and they will identify and can cross reference to other brands a direct substitute. Bearings come with new races they ARE A MATCHED SET do not try and use a new bearing with an old race. To remove the inner and outer races from the hub reach thru the center hole with a long flat nosed (drift) punch and tap one side then the other on a real stuborn one a little heat will help. Once out , set new race in place making sure the taper is out and tap gently to start. I use the wooden handle of a hammer . Once started use the old race placed on the new one to drive the new race home.
Growing older but not up !
