You're right. My mom is retired but works part time at a furniture restoration shop. She often uses a colored epoxy putty to fix gouges or recreate big missing pieces in stained wood. After using the stain pen to draw in the "grain," you can hardly tell there was a repair made. There's definitely an art to it, but for someone who's good at it, there aren't too many problems that can't be fixed!

Brad I just read all 16 pages of your post it didn't take me as long to read as it did for you to build ;)

I must say I'm way to old and health issues won't allow me to do much anymore so no building for me.

reading about a couple of posters working for cessna and beech.

I am a pilot since 1966, I have hombuilt two airplanes a Veri-E-zy and a smith sidewinder one all fiberglas and foam one tube and aluminum.

I am glad you included your grandfather and granduncle in the build.

it will be so neat to remember back and say "yep grandpa and I build it"

Pete, while I'm sorry to hear you're not building anymore, it sounds like you built a lot of memories with those two planes over the years. Personally, I've always taken a bit of a fancy to the Bede4, but I doubt I'll ever make one. Flying doesn't hold the romance for me that boating does. I can see us making a riverboat to explore the Great Loop in our retirement. Ah...dreams!

 Nice build!! I really like your cabinet idea. Looking through the build forums really highlights a lot of creative thinking. I think it is great your grandpa is helping you. Many of us would enjoy sharing such quality time with passed parents let alone grandparents. Enjoy. John

Hi Brad, excellent work and design on the cabinetry. Are you planning on storing your camp stove on the counter when towing or does it fit in one of the drawers in the slide out section? Thanks for posting your progress.

Cheers, Dave

I was faced with two major decisions in the galley: whether to include an icebox/cooler and/or a campstove. I quickly figured that an icebox the size of what we'd need would take up most of the cabinet space, and a small icebox and separate cooler just seemed silly. So: no icebox. To answer your question: no campstove in the galley either. We decided that those were two things that could be easily carried in the tow vehicle and we would reserve the cabinet space in the galley for small things not easily carried (dishes, utensils, etc). The stove is an old Coleman two burner that has a folding aluminum stand. The stand places it right about the level of the extending counter, which is nice. As with all things, it's about compromise.

Not a lot of progress lately, but here's a few pics:

We got the fenders primed, painted and mounted. I'm pretty pleased with the look considering they were $20/each at Redneck Trailer. I'd have loved a set of fiberglass ones, but the at the price, I'll be happy with these.

The majority of the galley is finshed with just a little trim, bread box, and a/c door yet to make.

The doors inside are finished and installed.

Can't wait for some warm weather!!!

Wow Brad, that's looking great! You have a real classic look going with the Kampster.

Did I miss you telling us about the logo above the window? How did you go about making it?

No, you didn't miss it. I was just playing around with positioning (it's attached with masking tape at the moment).

KerryD made them up for me. 3 stainless steel logos for $50. He uses a plasma cutter so you can't expect results like a CNC waterjet. They need a fair amount of dressing with a very small file.

Thanks! Left on the list before we head to Yellowstone this June:

*Battery and box (was going to put on the tongue, but current tongue weight of 112 lbs has me thinking about other options)

*Misc things in the galley (bread box, a/c door and some trim)

*I'd like to find tail lights off of a Model A truck to replace the temporary Harbor Freight ones I have right now

    *Hatch latch (ha!)

*Skin the hatch interior? I have to figure out if we're going to have a radio first. If so, I need to wire speakers into the hatch prior to skinning it.

I'm sure there's a few other things not on this list, but you're right...it's coming together! Hooray!

That's pretty slick! :D (both the name badge and your nonchalant picture without details!) How about a close-up?

The fine details like that really finish off a homebuild and give it that "professional appearance". You'll have people asking "where can they buy one?" in no time. Are you still going forward with the data plate?

Grandpa and I got in a little lake time in last week when it warmed up. It was a bit windy and the fish weren't biting, but it just felt good to get out and soak up some sunshine!
