newbie from Alberta

Postby Calgrick » Fri Mar 12, 2010 4:03 pm

I`ve been lurking for a while and decided to jump in, have bought trailer frame and have a friend to modify it (welding) . I enjoy wood working so will tackle construction myself using benroy plans from this site, Would like to hear from others in this neck of the woods on procedures to register trailer in Alberta as far as modifacations to use, utility trailer converted to camper etc. if inspection necessary.

Hello Calgrick.
I joined the forum about 2 years ago.Has been a great source of info.As for registering your trailer go to motor vehical office and they will give you the paper work.As I under stand it will cost $50.00 to have transport Canada do an inspection of your trailer to get your VIN. number. Then a $100.00 to register it in Alberta. Will be regestering mine this summer.
Good luck on your TD and hope to talk to you again.

Hi Calgrick, Welcome to the forum. I've been to Alberta many times and you have some of the most fantastic scenery right on your doorstep. With a little teardrop you will be able to make use of some of those really remote campgrounds.

Hope you have a camera for all the build photos you will be taking! <hint> ;)

Greetings from Scotland.
Kind Regards, BigAl.

Hi Calgrick,

I'm up in GP. I got a VIN put on my trailer last spring with no problem. I just filled out the paperwork, sent it in and the guy actually came out to my place. After that i just went to the registry office and got it registered. No need for an inspection. The guy for the VIN just needs to make sure that you didn't build it with stolen parts. We need to get all the Alberta Tear-droppers together for a gathering, and maybe set up an Alberta chapter. Later; Terry

Welcome Calgrick, I am unbuilt up in Edmonton.

If you are using an existing trailer frame (purchased with vin) and not building it I would suggest registering it first, it will probably be easier.

I think John is about right on the fees -it's been a while since I registered my utility trailer. The good news is you register trailers for life in AB, unlike a car or truck it doesn't need to be renewed each year.
