That reminds me, Fenlason remember my freak out about my time for a mile run about a month ago?
One of the kids I work with is on the track team that uses that track, and it's not 220 yards around, it's 400 meters.
4 Laps is a mile. I ran/walked two. No wonder my time was so off.

I knew something had to be off.. that is a lot off..

I had something sort of similar incident a couple of years ago on a bike ride. I have a cycle computor on our tandem. It is a Shimano Flightdeck. It is wired into my shift levers. So it always knows what gear I am in. It's control buttons are also in the brake hoods, so you can use them without moving your hands. The downside is you can also accidently hit them. For me usually when I am standing on a hill. From a particular screen, if you hit the left button you shut off aspects of the computor. It will show current speed, but your distance and ave speed recording ceases, it stays where it was when you hit the button.

On this particular ride, the last 8 miles is an area I love to hammer, and a place where I can usually pick up our ave. Some rides we get a good average part way through the ride, then we kill ourselves just to stay there.

Anyways this one I was at least hoping to keep our ave. where it was. So I am hammering along.. and feeling pretty good.. so I push more. looking down at the ave. It does not change. I am at the point where I think it should have.. so I push harder and harder.. my wife is killing herself on the back.. trying to match my pace, as are our riding partners behind us. They are all thinking "what the hell got into him"

I kill myself trying to pick up that ave.. and it does not budge.. not even a tenth. I push myself till I can't even see straight... and nothing...

Back home.. I realize that I had shut the computor off 8 miles back.... and in reality we had increased our ave. a couple of miles an hour...

Mandy.. there is a lot of Bull Sh*@ out there.

The "official" word now is to not stretch. People are not doing it right and hurting themselves. People end up in the ER because of hurting themselves stretching.. and they don't end up there from not stretching.. so "they" say don't stretch... :? WTF

There was an art. in Time magazine a year or so ago, that said for weight loss exercise did no good...  :x

They cited ... again stupid people. People doing something for exercise.. barely.. and then reward themselves with something for food. eating more than what they just burned...

I am hurting today.

I started stage 6 yesterday which has much to do with pull ups, so we start with the reverse ones. I haven't been this sore in quite some time.

What kinds of stretches do you recomend Glenn? I try to stretch but I'm not limber at all and due to my size and foot problem I can't do some of them at all.

Awesome, I'm averaging 16...still have work to do 18. I'm going for a second 100 on Saturday

Thank you.. good luck this Sat.

I am more a speed person vs a distance person... some of it is perhaps I am a former racer. Also it takes more of the day to ride 100 miles vs 40..

Most of the races we had around here were also shorter vs longer. I have only done 3 centuries in my life, and 1 double century. Some of them have been fairly fast though.

I have a newer friend that we started riding with last year.. he is into distance.. so I will be doing more of that. I am also working at making him faster..

Thanks, I agree the mid distance are less time consuming. I'm doing D to loose weight before the 100+ temperatures. Then limit the summer rides to 40 -50 miles. I don't think I could carry all the water needed for a century in the summer.

My usual twenty on the elliptical, followed by two circuits.
Jeanne had a migraine to the point of illness (if she hurts bad enough, she can't keep food down) so I forbade her from touching the bike.
A body in that sort of distress doesn't need any more stress.

Fenlason, why is it important for the computer to know what gear you're in? I'd have thought speed and RPM would be sufficient for the functions a bike comp gives.

I am becoming intrigued by your stages in your program. What sort of graduation does it use?
Are reverse pull ups like full body weight pull ups? I'm curious what your system calls a reverse pull up.
Mind elucidating?

I think Fenlason is riding a tandem and because the derailer is beyond visual sight, the Flightdeck indicates what gear he's in.

It might be interesting to know what gear your in, however knowing how much power your using in relation to speed is more useful. The iSport is a low cost effective way to do this. For example you could be in high gear but also expending more watts than you need to maintain a speed. Lower gear, more spin but less exertion at the same speed saves watts (your energy).

During a climb I like controlling my wattage around 230-250 to give my best ascent speed while conserving energy. Any higher and I'm just draining the tank. Also, drafting saves energy, but depending on the angel of the wind your not always in the best position to take full advantage. A quick look at power and you can adjust to lower energy expended. I was on a slight down incline, third in the draft showing 24 mph using 60 watts. Normally that would take, for me 300-400 watts. Did I stay with them...no, but it feels great knowing you got a free ride for 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile.

Yes it is primarily because of the tandem. It is nice to know exactly where you are.. gear selection wise. Another biggie for me, is that the Flight deck's cadence numbers are calculated vs actually counted. This means no wires or pick ups at the crank, but more importantly. It shows you while you are coasting, what cadence you would need to be at.

We have a lot of rolling hills here. You can be coasting in a full tuck, and by looking at the cadence.. know exactly when to stand and hammer the other side.

hmm that would be hard to list here.. and or describe. I started stretching and yoga.. over 30 years ago...

I will look at my book list.. and explore recommendations.

yeah.. that makes sense.

I have not gone back to it yet, but I used to wear a hydration pack as well as a few large bottles... but then still had to stop.. and I am sure it is worse out your way.

We were going to do a 33 mile loop [fairly hilly] but it was cold out, and we altered the loop.

We dressed for mid 40's and it was 30.. with a breeze... and we were quite cold. We did about 23 miles.. took it relatively easy except for some higher gear seated climbs...

Twenty mins as usual today,
Jeanne did two sets of ten, plus some walking at a Cowboy action shooting event we visited today.

Monday I test, and today I think will be the last twenty min ride for me.
Next week I'm going to go to thirty mins on non resistance days, twenty five on resistance days.
Sounds like one fancy computer, Fenlason, and thank you both for explanations of bike computers, as I've never used one or seen one used.

Today my speed never dropped below thirteen, a first. Must be the body getting better at the task at hand.
