Is anyone interested in Army/Navy Gear?

Postby Kixwy2 » Fri Mar 26, 2010 1:02 am

Some friends of mine that do estate sales are currently doing inventory on two huge warehouses in Garden Grove, CA. I got a chance to go by there today and it is seriously packed to the gills with stuff. Lots of clothes, rucksacks, bags, gear, tents, cots, two way radios, even old gas backpacking stoves - serious vintage and NOS.

If anyone is interested I can post the info and dates of the sale, assuming that's ok on the forum. (??)

Fun

Postby eamarquardt » Fri Mar 26, 2010 8:42 am

GG is within striking distance for me and it might be fun to see what they have. I don't think there would be an objection to posting the info as it's a one time deal and after all the forum is all about camping and the military stuff is good for camping.

My thought: POST AWAY!

Cheers,

Gus

 Yes could be some good camping stuff, and military sleeping sleeping bags are the best, having spent a few cold nights in them myself.

meh,
I have owned my fair share of Army/Navy surplus stuff and everything I pick up is usually novelty for a short period of time and then I throw it out. And most of this I did not purchase, it was actually issued to me. I have probably $400 worth of crap here in Afghanistan with me now that will just rot in my closet for the next 5 years before I finally toss it.

Jason,
Thanks for your service! My brother was in the Army for years until he got injured jumping out of a plane during a training exercise and had to be medically discharged. :(

A lot of the gear seems to be NOS pre Vietnam era, so it may be novelty, but I know some of the Army stuff rarely changes. I know that I use a mix of new tech gear and vintage equipment when I go camping, so I thought others might like it too. :)

I'm headed back there today and will get better directions (there's a fat guy out on the street with a motorhome - turn there - isn't exactly the best  ) and see if I can pick up some stuff pre-sale.

A MARINE finds a use for everything! Waste not want not!!!! When I was in the Corps the rumor was the first thing built on a AF base was the O-Club followed by the SNCO club and then the EM club! I personally felt my personal possession of a "squad stove" to be one of life's big pleasures. Hot chow in the field is to be savored!

Youse AF guys clearly have too much "logistics".

Be safe and be proud of your service.

Cheers,

Gus

Ok, I'll go ahead and post the info:

11352 Trask Ave, Garden Grove, CA
April 8-10
Hours 7am - 3pm

It's right off the 22 freeway - Euclid exit is the closest.

Be prepared to rummage, but the stuff is all pretty cool. Think flea market heaven. Somehow I spent $80 today and I'm not sure how that happened...

The some of the stuff I used during th mid 70's was virtually unchanged from both WW1 and WW2. I've seen my son's 782 gear (USMC lingo for field gear) and it is ALL different!!!!!!! It is all "state of the art" and really cool (but bear in mind that combat gear is heavier than recreational stuff). His night vision rifle scope was particularly cool. At least 2nd generation, no bigger than a red dot sight, powered by a single AA battery, and with it "we own the night"!

On the downside combat troops carry a lot of weight with the new body armor and other stuff.

Given a choice I'd rather go into battle with the new stuff any day (but I HATED my M16-A1 and would opt for an M14 any day but the M16-A2 has addressed most of the things I hated about the M16-A1 and it may be OK for me now).

Cheers,

Gus

WOW!

I have the same mess kit, and use it more for heating stuff over a propane burner than eating with it.

Nice finds, the lanterns can be restored particularly nice.

Thanks! :) There are some insanely weird finds in those warehouses, including a lot of old medical equipment, (still in sanitary condition) and even automatic weapon lube in the gallon drum. When I looked at some of the prices online, I was pretty amazed at how expensive the stuff was.

I'm planning on using the water jugs for desert camping, the netting for a screen flap for my future CTC, and the ammo cases just for fun. Here's a random pic I took of the "Wall O' Bags" :

Even the plastic bags above that shelf are filled with the ALICE bags. It's pretty incredible. I think the guy bought pallets of stuff at auctions, and it's obvious he's had these warehouses for 20 years or more. Those canteen cups? Hundreds of them in boxes, stamped with years as early as 1943.

Ammo boxes and stove

Postby eamarquardt » Sat Mar 27, 2010 3:24 pm

Yup, good stuff. I have two of the ammo boxes on the front of my utility/dump trailer to hold a jack, lug wrench, spare cables, and tie downs. Weatherproof and easy to modify with u-bolts so they can be locked with paddle locks.

The "squad stove" you got is just like the one I used to carry! The case is aluminum though. Still remember drinking c-rat hot chocolate (I don't drink coffee) at the mountain warfare training center in Bridgeport, Ca. The stove is a good find!!!

A while back I got some real nice interlocking aluminum poles that will see service as some sort of support for a sun shade.

Surplus stuff is fun!

Cheers,

Gus
