Help ...Attaching Roof

Good Morning Everyone
I need help in attaching my roof....i am using 1/4" BB 5 x 5 Ply and i am afriad if i use screws to attach i will not be able to countersink them , but if use nails what type , or i have access to a staple gun would this work???
was wondering what you experince builders did or are doing on your teardrop roofs....below is a pic on my roof.....Thanks in Advance

I wont have a hard roof on mine, but I do have a hatch skinned with 5.2mm maple/birch from a big box store. 5.2mm is less than a 1/4" and I didn't have a problem countersinking into it. I was careful, and the screws arent recessed.... they are just countersunk enough to be flush with the wood.

Get them just below the surface if you are planing to fill and paint. If you want a woody you will be covering them up so make sure there are no parts sticking up. Remember you can remove them after the glue dries.

It helps to use straps to hold the wood for the first 24 hours.

I used staples to hold down my 1/8" Baltic Birch until the glue dried. Then I covered up the staples with epoxy filler.

A good staple gun was one of my best purchases during the build

I used a harbor freight 18 gauge brad nailer.... once the glue is dry, the brads are really not necessary, the glue does all the holding....

Used cross boards and straps to hold it in place... while the glue dried.

I used 5/8" staples and Tightbond III glue.

I used a stapler at the edges, where it would be hidden by trim later, and the whole spar is glued. Don't worry so much about over securing the top, after reading this forum, it seems the one thing I picked up was how much everyone over built their tear. I used a good polyurethane glue, and it sure seems solid to me, no lifting anywhere yet. To secure it during glue up, I used 16' straps and a lot of 40lb bags of wood pellets to hold it in place while it dried. I also applied glue to both sides of the insulation to creat a good though bond across the whole sheet of Baltic Birch.

As many said, the screws are only needed until the glue sets.



I glued my 1/8" roof ply with PL Premium. Because the material is thin, I used 1/4" plywood backer strips to help spread out the clamping force of the screws. The screws are self-drilling washer head screws. I did not pre-drill the holes.

Of course, this way does require filling screw holes before sealing. This, though, did not take much time.
