I am building something

Postby NorthernMN » Tue Mar 30, 2010 11:54 pm

I don't know what to call it. Maybe you don't even want me in your cool club of teardrop campers. None the less I have started constructing my trailer. I have spent a bunch of time reading through other builds and I see some folks have built bigger. I am sure all of you that have "tiny trailer" are plenty happy with them but I am going to start with something a little bigger.

Last year I bought a 1973 Pathfinder. Quite a piece of junk. I got it cheap enough and I was intending to "fix it up". However, once I got into it I realized there was no real chance of saving it.

Here is what I started with.

Image

It was a real daisy. The former owner had done some creative repairs and interesting electrical work. It didn't tale me long to realize that it would be better off burning it to the ground or whatever.

In February I broke out the hammer, sawzall, and crowbar and set to work.

Image
Image

As you can see lots of rot and nasty. Mice had obviously lived in the walls. The insulation or lack of, was terrible. You can see that the former owner had replaced some of the fiberglass with new fiberglass. All the "repairs" he had done from the inside. I found the process of taking this apart to be an interesting learning appearance. I always figured they were built better. Not much to them. Of course this has held up well enough for 35 year of use. Perhaps I should give them more credit.

It took me about two weeks to strip this down to the frame. The frame was in pretty good shape for over 35 years old. Some surface rust but otherwise sound.

Image

I spent another solid week with the grinder and wire wheel cleaning up the frame. I should have borrowed a sand blaster or took it somewhere to get blasted. What a mess in the shop. Everything is covered in rust dust and dirt.

Image

After cleaning up the steel I narrowed the frame to 7 feet. I am not fond of the chubby campers that are wider than the wheels. The main frame rails are 5 feet apart anf there are just some dog ears welded on to support the over hang of the floor. I cut them back to bring the width inline with the outside of the wheel base. I just ended up cutting the dog ears shorter with a grinder and cutting wheel.

The coupler was in poor shape as was the a-frame jack. It took some delicate work to cut the coupler off without cutting up the frame but I got it done. Ordered a new coupler, a-frame jack, and stabilizer jacks from Etrailer.com. I want to make sure I have a good foundation to build on.

Gave the whole frame a coat of quality rusty steel primer even though I spent a good deal of time getting the rust off the frame.

Image

I could have just left it primer but what if someone crawls under and checks to see if I painted it. Indeed I gave it a nice black coat. The frame, excluding the bumper and any overhang is 12' 4" by 7' (now) and that will be my build size.

Dang my shop is a mess. I better clean it up before I post any more pictures.

Welcome! You have quite a bit of work in front of you, but by the looks of it you're going to enjoy every minute of it! Congrats on the cheap find!

Been there. :? Now what's the build plan? Recreate the original shape & layout, or design your own?

I always find what failed interesting, comes from my non destructive testing background. Seems like darn few old trailers do not have major wood rot problems. Having had lots of experience in removing rust I agree sand blasting is probably best, but i did not do that and used a surplus gas mask (full face) so I did not breath all that.
I will be interested in your build.

You know, taking stuff apart is an education! I bet you learned something. So not a total loss. Build a standie on that nice frame. Have fun.

Plan? If I had a plan someone might expect too much out of me. I do believe I have some good ideas though. I will let the trailer tell me what it wants to be. I might try and tell it to do things my way at times though.

The floor

Postby NorthernMN » Wed Mar 31, 2010 11:51 pm

So this needs a floor of course. I decide to use 3/4" plywood for no other reason than it was what the floor was made of originally.

Image

I chose 3/4" oak plywood. My intention is to use the oak face and the finished floor. If it doesn't work out I can always cover it down the road. I picked it up at Menards on sale for $28 a sheet. Seemed pretty fair. It isn't real high quality of course but it is 9 ply and seems to stay flat.

I am building the floor upside down. Since the trailer is so heavy I cannot easily turn it over. I don't want to have to crawl under it to do a bunch of work either. All the seams are being butt joined and aligned with several biscuits. There is also a substantial substructure that will mate with every place it touches the frame.

Image

Image

With the substructure done it is time for insulation. I could probably get away without any but I do live in Minnesota. I also camp out in Western North Dakota for a couple weeks each year in the Little Missouri Grasslands at the end of October. I figure I only have to go through the trouble once and the floor is right in front of me.

I know there has been much debate reagrding the underside of the floor and what or if to cover it with. What did I pick. Glass Fiber Reinforced Asphalt Emulsion. It was about $15 for a gallon and one gallon was all I needed to cover the whole bottom.

As it was built originally the whole bottom was faced with a giant aluminum sheet. I must say the floor was in excellent shape except for the places when the aluminum sheet had been damaged and water got in. I did consider going this route and covering the bottom with new aluminum but I felt the cost was too high.

Image

Image

My wife laughed at me when she caught me painting the pink insulation black. Something about what difference did it make on the bottom. Of course I declared that someone might look. And besides I would know it was pink under there and I just couldn't handle that.

With some help from my lovely wife we were able to flip the floor over so the nice side was up and I could bolt the floor down. I used 50, 1 1/2" SS lag bolts to hold it to the frame. All attached from the underside so nothing is visible from the top side.

Image

Now if I could just decide on the profile I could start on some walls. :?

Very nice so far...will be watching your progress/insulation decisions as we share a similar climate.

Can't wait to see what you come up with for the generous frame!

So where were we then? Ah yes, walls. So I need to come up with a profile or plan or something. I am sure what I came up with already has a name. I bought extra sheets of cheap lauan so I could make a profile template. Tonight was my first experiment. I am kind of liking what I came up with.

Image

I started messing around with SketchUp so I might play with that a bit and see if I really like what I came up with.
