Here's my Easter Sunday update:

I got the door insulated and skinned, fit up the handle and did a trial fit. The interior skin was too thick and would allow the paddle handle to slip past the stop on the latch. What that means is that I could lock myself in the trailer and have to take the latch apart to work it. I'll skin the interior with some of the leftover aluminum from the roof and it works fine.

After we skinned it, I found that the holes for the taillights didn't line up right with the creases in the aluminum. Mike A noticed it when we did the tracing on that piece so we didn't cut them out at that time...Thanks Mike! It took a while to reshape them so that it all looked right...got the taillights installed.

I also made up the screen door today, The middle panel and the slider on the right are some of the left over laminate I had.

Definitely time to pick up the shop...I spend too much time looking for stuff! Doug

You posted before I got the last one up Jeremy....it doesn't have the screen in it yet. It will get painted a light aqua like in the interior. Doug

Looks cool. I like the design in the bottom panel. Now my dumb question. If your walls are 3/4" thick, and the screen door is 3/4", how thick is the door?

Hey Doug,
Really like the screendoor design. Was that hard to do? Where DO you get these inspirations of Design..Totally Cool!! :applause: Is that just a photo glitch for the front panel..doesn't look like it lines up to the side, but knowing your eye for detail I'll go with photo glitch :) LOVE the taillights

Jeremy...Scotties used a 2" Z shaped door jamb. It helps to stiffen the wall. I had material broke up and welded it. The door is ~ 1.25" thick, the screen is 3/4". Scotties also had a much thinner screen on them and it was in aluminum. I wasn't finding what I needed for it, so went with wood. Since I didn't have a door to start with and had a paddle handle latch, I had to make the door thickness to match the latch. I may have to rout the back edge on the screen so that it fits within the edge on the back lip of the jamb. It would have all fit in the 2" I allowed but changed plans. I'm only going to use an 1/8" aluminum flange on the outside of the door rather than the ply like I had originally thought, so that eats up 1/4". It's just a smoother finish to the door on the exterior...It's all kind of a fit and build as I go thing, this is where a parts trailer is a real +.

John...It must be a photo thing...the sides were installed as continuous sheets of material and then the door was routed out after. The staple line in the picture will be covered with a top strip of material to hide it. The door is just clear pine, with some pocket screws and epoxy. I wanted something in the lower portion as most screens have that, I know my dog would have just run through it without it. A big empty space to do something in. It's not a real structural thing, that's all in the frame. Doug

Doug,

You're on the home stretch and it looks great! Make sure to post some close-ups of how the screen door works with the door (I might want to steal your technique  ).

I'll do that Bruce....I just modified a regular steel 2.5" piano hinge to allow both the door and the screen. We'll see how it all mounts up. Doug

Hi Doug: The Nomad is looking really good. It won't be too long before you are finished with it. I like the screen-less door you made for it. Do you have any plans for your next build? If you are not planning on building another one right away, you can always come to Reno and give Pam M & me a hand with our builds. (LOL) I will even let you make some design decisions. But, they will need to be good ones. I KNOW that would be the case. You do such nice work, I wish I lived next door to you. That way I could pick your brain from time to time.

Any who, very nice work on the "Sierra Nomad".

John, after re-reading your post, I get what you are talking about, they don't...they can't as it takes more material to get around a curve than on the flat side so they will gradually get more uneven as it goes down and I had to start in a spot to hit the cross members and to maximize use of the material...it was a little pricey!

Johnny D...I always have ideas cooking...still want to do a bread box 40's type thing...but that's a ways off right now....

Danny....the saw isn't the only thing off square... ;) Doug
