Our School Is Forced To Drop Nickname

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Art imitates life- 8)

In the book "Speak," that I am reading with my high school students, the local High School is changing it's name from the Fighting Trojans, because the name "Trojans" doesn't send a strong abstinence message. They change the name to the "Blue Devils", which causes an uproar because of the association with the Devil. They then become "Tigers" and there are protests from the animal rights activists. It goes on and on and finally they end up as the Fighting Wombats.
To which the student body responds: What the hell is a Wombat??

There is a town on the other end of the state, animal activists want the school to drop the town name of Spearfish, because it conveys the message of animal cruelty.
If I could shut my brain off, I could save myself alot of time, money and effort.

Fishkill is a town in New York. The animal rights activists have been pestering them to change their name for many years. However, the name has nothing to do with killing fish. The town was established by Dutch settlers and the name in Dutch means "fish creek". However the animal rights activists claim that it gives the "appearance" of animal cruelty.

I grew up in the town of Brookville PA. I'm proposing that they change their name too since it could be interpreted as exploiting the Brook trout in the local creek. (Just in case sarcasm doesn't come across too well in print, please note that I am a sarcastic SOB)

Bisons!

Postby eamarquardt » Sat Apr 10, 2010 9:47 pm

My father was a football player for the Bisons at NDSU in the late 30's early 40's and graduated just in time to join the Marines for WWII. They are still the Bisons. Apparently being a Bison is politically correct, still!

Maybe the University of North Dakota could become the (wooly) Mammoths!

I think Mammoths would be politically acceptable. Plus they could have a cool mascot.

Cheers,

Gus

Ralph Engelstad made his money on building and he own the Imperial in Las Vegas and one in Biloxi. We were very fortunate that he remembered to U with the arena. The one for High School in Thief River Falls cost $15 Mill and is just wonderful for HS tournament.

Somewhere I read that North Dakota has more millionairs per capita than any other state. I'm thinking I know 4 or 5 for sure and there just regular guys that made it big in farming and business.

down south of here. there is a road which keeps losing it's signpost. It's Muff Road. There's been some debate recently about changing the name. all to no avail, it's staying as Muff. And a more solid sign "post" is being planned.

And on the more politically correct front. south of there are 2 towns about 50 miles apart. Clinton & Gore .

I gotta ask, if they don't like "The Fighting Sioux" would they prefer
"The passive Sioux"? or
"The smiling Sioux"? or
"Since There is no more Fighting Sioux we showed them"?

The Fighting Sioux isn't exactly an insult. This has nothing to
do with politically correct, it has to do with control. Tell them to
go ahead and get rid of the name, make sure everyone forgets
all about them and their existence.

Bigwoods wrote:I think the plan is to go without a name for 5 years anyway. The hardest part of this is that when the ruling came down on 12 schools, only UND was faced with the restrictions. The Seminoles. Utes, Indians and several others were exempt because it was thought the tribes wanted those names.

Then he donated the Little Ralph to his high school team in Thief River Falls, Mn. Quite a guy.

University of Utah had to re-certify their name with the Ute tribes a few years ago when this became an issue. They and others were not exempt but were able to secure permission quite easily. In fact the spokesman for the Ute tribe said that they would be offended if they dropped the name since they receive royalties for the use. The logo however was slightly changed.

Which begs the question how the NCAA overlooks the fact that North and South DAKOTA, Utah, Illinois, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri. etc, all contain the names of Native American tribes.

Pretty cool about the Gymnasium and those are great logos that they will have to get rid of. I'll bet Ward Churchill is proud of himself about now.
