Political correctness will destroy us all !!!! Even Disney can't sell copies of Song of the South in the US because of "political correctness," yet that movie has some of the most recognizable Disney music and characters in it (at least from my generation). Sorry folks, it's not pretty, but it is our history. We need to accept that we know better now, learn from previous generations mistakes, and move on ... don't hide the truth. In fact, we should be teaching this to our children right along with the reasons why stereotypes are not the right way to think about others.
Security guards can't even use what I call common sense or reasonable suspision to decide who will go through additional security at the airport, who the police should pull over, or the border patrol decide who is a potential illegal alien because of "political correctness." I can't refer to a person of color (is that the current correct term?) using almost half of the words in the dictionary, but if that same person calls me any of several racial epithets it's their first amendment right because I'm not officially part of a "minority."
Words change meaning over time. Do you think that Hanna-Barbera were promoting homosexuality when Fred Flintstone is going to have a "gay old time?" The word gay used to mean happy or joyous. How about the word "thong" ... my grandparents think of a leather strap, I think of footwear, and my kids think of underwear.
Now, I'm not suggesting that we give the "N" word a free ride, but everyone is going to have to see the written word and hear speech, in the manner in which it was intended, not the way that it can be mis-construed. Do you think that there are farmers out there that are offended by the term "Aggie"? I would bet most of them know better. These team names for the most part are a source of PRIDE, not meant to offend, and in my opinion, no offence should be taken.
