A/C install

Postby CliffinGA » Tue Apr 20, 2010 12:59 pm

Hey all have a question, I saw this on ebay on a trailer for sale. Its on a Lil Guy and it looks like a great solution for adding one to mine. Curious if anyone has done this and how they did theirs?

Thanks

This is the only picture of the AC installed and the curtain is in the way. You can see the upper right corner of the neich if ya look real hard. I thought the shade might help the performance but the see thru roof generated more heat than the 5000 btu did cool.

I like it Bobhenry!! My lil tear is alot smaller so the woodstove wood roast us a live, lol. What I'm thinking now of doing is to measure the door opening and make a plywood panel that I can paint to match the tear when I paint it in a few weeks. Since I'm going to be finish the inside I will add extra support on either side of the door so I can put some of those twist fastners to hold the panel in place and have weather stripping on the other side to seal around the door. Make a cut out for the a/c opening at about the same height as the one pictured. Atleast will be a quick fix for the GA swelting summers and make th DW very happy when we head to the Cloudland Canyon gather in middle of July. If she ain't happy I don't get to play with my camping stuff lol!!

A 5000 Btu AC unit will probably be way too much and will likely short cycle. There are a number of options, Pet Cool using hoses and front plenum on a 5,000 Btu feeding in some warmer air etc that you may wish to consider.

Mine has it's own cabinet but there are several ways to do this.

You can set it on the tongue and pipe the air in.
It can go under and pipe in the air.
You can get a Pet Cool (expensive)
There are lift off hinges for doors so you can make another door with the air in.

You might need to modify if your cycling too much....

One reason I was thinking of this is I plan and have a promise from the wifey that if we like this alot then I will get rid of this and build a generic Benroy!!! Thats why I want to do something simple for now because for the benroy I will build it into it.

Thanks for all the ideas so far!!

:o I looked at your album and wow, not a lot of room for air. I think I would go with hoses on this one.

You can make a board to fit in the window for hose adapters. Like dryer hose and use sewer fittings...... Maybe someone has a picture of theirs. I will try to find some.

Get building. You might not like this as much as you would something a bit bigger..... 8) :D

True but for the $600 I paid for it, makes a heck of a start!! Plan on reusing the frame and the doors which was worth the money.

Click onto sdtripper2's Index (ongoing) then scroll down just one-half page...

The "Air conditioner Ideas" list of threads begins there. Hope you have a comfortable chair!

Good luck, dewd! and I second Miriam's idea. Jump in a build the Benroy!

Thanks Chris and Auntie M,

After looking thru Sdtrippers index (I layed on the couch so yes very comfortable :D ) and decided to fix something like the pet cool hoses and have a return back to the a/c so maybe control the thermostat. I'm going to pick up some insulated foaming type board they use to build the air handler units in new homes. Alot of it is thrown away at the jobsites I work on here in Atlanta so it won't cost anything and can get the hosing that way also. I like the fact I can keep it on the ground away from the td so it can just drain away from the td. Since I'm going to reuse the doors for the Benroy project I can keep t to use on it.

Thanks for all the help!!

Cliff

ps: Chris I'm now getting hooked on the 200A's LOL!!

 If you get a milk crate or similar to set the air on you won't have to lift it from the ground. 8) ;) Be sure to take lots of pictures!

With two doors it is very easy to give up one for an ac unit. This solution has worked great for me as I can pack the ac in the bed of the truck and add the ac unit with my insert as needed.

I like it Barb besides the td will be under a cover when camping. I will probably do something like this for now.

It seems very odd to me that you would go through all that trouble to make 2 doors just to have one be inoperable. A couple of holes in the sides, floor, or even through the galley for hoses to a separate unit makes sense.
Just my 2.5 cents.

Just for reference.

Q: How hard is AC to put in and take out. How does it pull with you HD? I have Harley just seeing how good it pulls. Why u Selling? TKS Apr-20-10
A: It is very easy to put the AC in. The AC is mounted in a lightweight panel that fits perfectly in the door. Just open the door, put the panel in from the outside and secure it on the inside with the toggle clamps that are already mounted. No tools needed and it can be installed/removed in about 10 seconds. It pulls great with my bike. I pulled it on a 300 mile trip first time I used it. There were no issues at all. This camper is constructed/designed to be towed by motorcycles, trikes, and small cars.I am selling it because my son has gotten into motorcross racing and I bought a toy hauler to haul his bikes in. Thanks, Todd
