Northern Tool 5x8 trailer

Postby Evil Skippy » Tue Apr 20, 2010 4:30 pm

I couldn't find a thread on northern tool trailers. I have both Northern tools and a HF store near by and want to know the pro's and con's of both.

At the moment I am planning a 5' wide design (likely to change many times before I get to actually build), so the northern tool trailer looks great, but is much higher priced than the HF trailers.

Do they both need the same amount of modification? Is one trailer perferable for certain designs? Does the Northern tools trailer have too short of a tounge? (I think it's only 28")

I found this on the Northern tools website: http://www.northerntool.com/downloads/m ... 125692.pdf
5ft. x 8ft. Heavy-Duty Trailer with 5.30-12in. Tires

If you look at the paperwork for the HF 5x8, you will see that they are the same trailer. Once in a while the northern tool trailer goes on sale with free shipping for $499.

I bought a Northern Tool 5X8 about 3 years ago. It came welded together with no deck. At that time it was 300 bucks with a title. I will tell you that the paint they use is crap. Plan on using some bed liner or something on it. Solid unit with no assembly.

I have a Northern Tools 5x8 that I got for $300 also. It works fine. Their less expensive trailer is NOT listed on their web site. It is an in store item only. I think they sell it for under $400.

Item# 125692: Bolt together 5x8 trailer.

They sure do look like the same trailer. One with sides, one without.
I have used this trailer, although I did weld it together.
I extended the tongue slightly and relocated the axle.
No complaints with the trailer.

I'd like to avoid as much trailer modification at possible. I've been thinking about using jacks at all 4 corners, and not moving the axle back, and I've changed my design so it doesn't extend over the tounge, hoping that I won't have to modify it.

Thanks TPM, I didn't know they didn't show all their trailers online, now I have an excuse to go to Northern tools :)

Skippy,

I didn't move the axel on my Generic Benroy at all. The tongue weight is about 100 lbs. I don't use any jacks or supports in any corner of my tear and it works just fine resting on the tongue jack and the two tires. Hardly moves at all even with two people and a 100 lb yellow lab inside. I did buy stabilizer jacks but don't use them.
