The Shank Family: 1950's Teardrop Home Movies & Website

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

Postby Carter » Sun Apr 18, 2010 6:39 pm

I ran across the Shank films a couple of years ago and loved them. This is the perfect place for a link. I enjoyed them again. I've been to some of the places depicted but never with the adventure of these films. Larry is right, now you might find a traffic jam. Thanks for posting them, enjoyed the revisit and am happy our other members can enjoy them.

I need a new Avatar. I'd put my dog up there but she doesn't look much like me. She's the skinny one.

Here's a couple of pics I took in 2002 at a gathering in Oceanside, CA. That's Harriette Shank in the blue jump suit.

Wow. The difference in these two pictures to me is like an animal going from the splendor of the Serengeti or the wilds of the Brazilian Rain Forest - to a petting zoo.

I speak only in terms of the vastness in Harriette Shanks teardrop past and how those days are now confined to campgrounds. (Someplace her son said they rarely if ever stayed at.) Just an amazing contrast.

(No offense to teardrop gatherings intended.)

Postby Larry Shank » Thu Apr 22, 2010 1:18 pm

Thanks to Scott G. for sharing the link to our Family stories about the Jeep and Teardrop !! Glad that so many enjoyed the pictures and history.
Hello and thanks to Cliff Cuyeda as well for the updated photos from the SCTT Rally at Lake Perris, plus the Jeep invoice copies etc. We have met several times at other rallys.(sorry we did not have time to talk that day). Hi to Gage too for remembering my Mom at the Oceanside gathering in 2002. She had a Blast!!
I just joined your group and hope to be in touch in the future.

Hello Larry, welcome aboard. Probably don't remember me because I only talked to you guys back then but have seen you guys at all the other gatherings sense. Are you guys going to the Spamboree Reunion this year? Also if you have the time off, you might think about the Dam Gathering up at Lake Shasta the end of the month.

As a side note. Feel free to up load the two pics if you wish.

Thanks for the Welcome

Postby Larry Shank » Fri Apr 23, 2010 10:56 am

Hi Gage,
Thanks for the welcome ! No, I don't remember seeing you at the last rally. Sorry about that. I am only now getting to know and recognize a few people, like Cliff, on the few rallys we attend.
The only event I plan to visit right now is the Pismo Beach Rally in May. It is fully booked so I was just planning a day trip w/o the Jeep/Teardrop.
Can't make it to Shasta, I thought that Damien had stopped doing the Spamboree. When and where is that event? Still Sept. in Oceanside?
Thanks, Larry

Larry,

Good to see you aboard this forum, and it's about time! Jus' kiddin'. I remember trying to entice you to visit here the first time I met you at Rivernook, and posted some of the same links Oasis Maker did a long while back for the folks here. I didn't get to spend much time during the SCTT rally visiting. I was just on a day mission and doing a walk through.

I will also be at the Pismo Rally if you visit for the day.

Welcome Larry! We should all be thanking YOU for sharing your website and incredible archive. There are very few people that can provide those kind of personal visuals of our teardrop and camping past. Gage can drop those kind of historical family photos as well and they just stop you in your tracks when you see them.

As with many people, I kinda backed into the history of teardrops (so to speak). My initial motivation and research for a small RV was dictated by the limited towing capacity of my 99 Jeep. Prior to that, I had never even heard of teardrop trailers before. So the internet is where I got my information and that led me to discover your website, the Sorensen's site, teardrop forums, and ultimately become a happy teardrop owner. But your family site captured the spirit of what I was seeking more than anything else.

Again, welcome aboard and thanks!

Oh... and feel free to exhaust the family archives of :pictures: here.

Scott,
Yes I have a lot of old photos and storys but I am not much of a computer internet guy, with download capability etc. , but would love to share them. I am in the country without High Speed, as well.
Lots of the photos are in 35mm slides, but a good sampling have been transferred to prints. There are more movies but most of the highlights are already posted. I guess I should check in with Gage and compare notes?

Hey Cliff,
Hope to see you at Pismo. You can give me your thoughts on photos to share (you have seen many of them) and how to do it.
Yea, I should have joined before.

Larry, just kiddin' ya! Really the pleasure is for the group here that have interests in your jeep/teardrop rig, and story. Now that you've joined, the more people learn of your stories, the more questions they will have. In other words, you will consume many hours here just answering the questions. Are your typing fingers starting to hurt yet. Ha ha. but hopefully you will find the comraderie here GREAT! Hopefully you will also be able to tap into resources and information that will be helpful to you one way or another.

As for picture postings, yes we can elaborate in future discussions. There are a few free picture hosting websites that you can use to link to. Your ISP (internet service provider) may provide a little web publishing space free that you can post basic HTML pages for your personal use. I subscribe for hosting space, and install my own, but it is not for the basic users to try and program.

P.S. If you truly want to to scan your more of 35mm (for everyone else's sake), Costco will have the inexpensive slide scanners to convert to digital files on sale peridically.

Cliff, yes I have been thinking about the 35mm scanners and I will start looking into that. I have a couple of friends that probably can help with the tech side of picture/movie copying and downloading. I will feel free to check with you as well. Thanks.
Also thanks again to all for sharing their pictures of the rig. Those new photos are now in the archives.

The new location of my web pages with the Shank family movies and photos is:

http://cj3b.info/Owners/Shank/Shank.html

The forwarding link which has been at the old location for a couple of years now, will probably disappear soon.
