When I was in college my mother died suddenly of a stroke.
My father had ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) and my mother had been taking care of him. My older brother was a surgical resident at UCLA and got only 1 day off every two weeks.
I became the HMFIC of the family caring for my father and 13 year old brother. If I wasn't in class (full college load) I was with my father. I did get a few hours off every other week. Dad was wise and knew I had to go the "distance" and took it easy on me. Dad felt when my older brother came home it was "holiday" routine and asked for a lot more. My brother couldn't see how I made it 13 days, ha.
I was very busy!
Dad lasted another 8 months. We were able to keep him out of the hospital. His last night was really a bear (for both of us) as he was having considerable difficulty breathing. My brother usually called in the a.m. to see how we slept. My answer that final morning: "I don't know. We didn't get enough to form an opinion". Gotta have a sense of humor!
So, I'm proud of you for taking care of your wife and sticking by her side. I know how much effort is required.
Suzy and I hit 36 years last week.
Respectfully,
Gus
