Exercise Anyone?????????????

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Yes modest gains are good.. actually they are probably better and safer.

I am not sure I suggested, that you do not increase resistance. Although with some of what I said, I can see how it could be interpreted that way.

We have no way to know how fit you are.. or how much resistance you are currently using. Or how much more resistance you can handle, before that twinge in your right knee, causes a problem.

Learning to spin quickly.. is a skill probably only of value to a cyclist. Building a base, would be of value to everyone.

While I probably would not go do a century in 1st gear. I do often do group rides in very low gears. Many cyclist use to big a gear.. and they could go faster with lower gears. I will go for a ride and stay in the small ring for the whole ride.... for one.. to prove a point, and to set an example. It was also a skills building "thing" for me. One needs to constantly work at developing and keeping that spin.

Yeah.. I understand that bodies adapt.. to what is asked of them. Yet I think my leg muscles grow pretty easily. Back in school.. way back in school. I was a runner. I ran cross country, not marathon distance, but not sprints either. My legs got quite big, from that.

As I said my legs got big from biking.. yet some guys I raced with, as fast as I, had toothpicks for legs, some others were larger than me.

A pure marathon runner is like the body builder.. in that he is very very specifically focused, they don't want a lot of mass. There bodies do adapt to that, some on it's own, some with because of the persons intension.

As a competitive cyclist. I also did not want any more mass than necessary. I needed a certain amount of upper body strength, but to much mass would slow me down.

Some of it comes down to fast twitch vs slow twitch muscles. Your jogger.. or people that put all that time in the gym.. kind of mindlessly putting in their hours.. are not using their fast twitch muscles.

While I like LSD work.. low slow distance.. I am also a huge fan of intervals.. and very intense work. :D

It was forecast to be wet and cold tonight.. I was sort of hoping not to ride..

There were others waiting to ride.. so I went. 7 of us.. only 15 miles.. we had some slower riders.. and no slow ride leader.. so we stayed together.. semi. Interestingly I got to do what I was just talking about.. rode the whole ride in the small chainring. I even got my wife to hit a cadence of 130 on the tandem.. :D

Thirty on the ex bike.
Jeanne had a margerita at dinner and blew her workout off. She never takes days off, so when she does it's no biggie.

winds are gusty to 40, so biking and running are out. Going for a 2 mile swim and then headed to a half marathon organizational meeting.

I am not sure I knew you were 6"5" :o :o

you might have said before.. but it did not register..

nice photo...

Left to right Kevin (big guy), Tom (half flat), Larry (Mr. Kick my ass)

Used to be 300 lbs and spent half my rides in granny gear. Weight does make a difference.

Took a page from your book tonight. 32.8 miles averaging 14 in wind & traffic all flat. Rolled lower gear and spun. Woke up some muscles, keep that up and I'll have another card I can play.

Going for 150 miles on Saturday.

finally got the spare room cleaned out today, now I can use my Total gym!
twenty min walk, two sets of twenty five each (lowest difficulty level) Leg Pull (a sort of hamstring assisted knee in with a mini crunch added) and Pullover (with crunch added) these exercises I've only seen on a Total gym, not sure you could get the same effect with traditional gym equipment.
I do believe I'll be doing Total Gym workouts instead of push ups, etc., in spite of it being a bit of a hassle to reset between exercises in some cases, because it's progressive and I believe the exercises are pretty functional.
The first two week consist of these two movements by themselves, then more exercises are added in as you progress.
These two movements hit a surprising variety of muscles, many of which are neglected in traditional workouts, and are therefore weak. (at least mine are) We'll see how well this works.
Jeanne only did six and a half minutes today, but she joined me with the Total Gym, so that's a type of exercise she hasn't been getting.
Before she took up exercise she was too weak and stiff to get on and off this thing (It sits very close to the floor)
the reason she only did six and a half minutes was because she started getting dizzy and I made her quit, as I think she was over doing it. (HR monitor said 125 BPM but folks with heart disease sometimes just can't push hard until they build up a base of fitness. (I can't keep up a pace that shows 125 on that thing, either)

I had a rough ride tonight. hmm I am not sure the distance.. that loop should be between 28 and 30... I forgot to check.

It was much colder than expected. We actually had a couple of wild snow squalls today. It was also very very windy.. and just just straight line winds.. it was blowing all over.. and they said gusting to 40mph.

Not that the winds should not have slowed us down.. but I felt I had nothing in my legs.. :(

We did have a few places where the wind was semi helpful.. and did manage to end up with an 18mph ave.

I seem to notice ... hmm I am not sure how to say this.

A given pulse.. lets say 145bpm.. does not feel the same from one activity to another. biking at 145 vs having a pulse of 145 swinging my kettlebell feels very different... or comparing running to riding. I can easily get the pulse there.. and in running... it is not that the legs or something hurts more. I am talking the heart and lungs feel different.

I am still amazed at the changes in pulse vs comfort.. as it changes through the warm up process. Before I am properly warmed up.. 145 can hurt like heck.. and once warmed up.. 165.. can be held for quite some time.. more comfortably.

Perhaps.. it is all a matter of warm up. I am not really ready to go.. until at least 30 minutes into a workout. Which is some of the reason I don't like the shorter work outs.

if I go out for a 3 mile run.. the run is over.. in less time, than before I am really ready to hammer on the bike.

That's why I prefer perceived rate of exertion over HR, because you mat be able to walk or run at an HR of, say, 165 in relative comfort, but 115 on a bike (even a stationary) may be a challenge.
I believe if you're sweating good, but not gasping for breath, you're in the range for a good workout.
Tonight split my ride into two fifteen minute segments, with me and Jeanne alternating. Sit bones much happier, and less boredom.
Hmmm. Might be a good idea to work up to a full thirty (or more) minutes
sort of gradually.
Or, given my propensity for sprints, maybe short fast rides are my best approach. Never was on for long slow jogs.

Twenty min walk and Total Gym workout. Was so sore from initial workout I didn't think I'd get all my reps, but I did...and still feeling a bit of doms from the first workout immediately following the second.
Jeanne two fifteen min rides. we'll do her Total Gym workout on alternate days from mine, so I don't have to train both of us on the same day.

I did a 40 minute run and then came home and signed up for a half ironman triathlon. That is a 1.2 mile swim a 56 mile bike and then a 13.1 mile run. My goal is to complete that event, not to compete in it at all.

My training is going to really be tricky with my work schedule, my daughter's high school graduation, my band commitments, and keeping my family happy also. I am glad I have a wife that understands me and is willing to help me make it work. I want to do a full ironman at some point, and this is a stepping stone.
