Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

Postby Prem » Wed May 05, 2010 10:57 am

First rule of a financially prudent person: Never pay full retail.

Used cargo trailers that aren't all bashed up are virtually impossible to find, let alone to one's personal specs.

Ya dun good!

Imagine someone showing up with vanilla ice cream at a chocolate ice cream party. One guy went ape. I had to move. But two other odd "flavors" were there right in the middle of it all. It was a good party after the initial weirdness.....and a couple of stiff drinks.

I believe it.. They probably consider something you can stand up in is a waste.. Teardrops or cool little trailers. But to me they are not much more then a small tent.. Ever tried changing cloths laying down with a couple foot of space above you? Not for me..Heck I'd rather be in my tent since its got more room.

Prem - when you show up to a South central event we'll let ya park wherever you choose. Perhaps some are put off by the quality of your work 8)

Seems to me that a few people will try to make a "fundamental religion" out of just about any pet, hobby, camping equipment or even brand of soda pop, or even brand of whisky. (I know a guy whose main dedication and "outreach" is Veganism. Can't even eat honey. Stolen from sentient bees.)

You're right. There's a point when a tiny travel trailer (round or squared off) comes close to being a coffin-like sleeping space on wheels. 4-wide has a large "congregation."

The best 4-wide I've ever seen has gull-wing doors. It's awesome. Perfect for newly weds!

Now *that* is a mighty friendly and kind invitation. My daughter and son-in-law are moving to Austin next October. Now I have two reasons to head on down to Texas. You rock! Thanks.

The quality of my work is a little shabby compared to some cabinet makers who have built their own TTTs. (One is that *beautiful* gull-wing 4-wide that I mentioned in the previous post.)

Slightly less than perfect means I don't have to feel so bad when it starts to get a little yellowed, scratched up and dinged from over use!

May we all be blessed with over use of our trailers!

Madjack,

Last year I said I'd report back on the MPG gain from the AirTabs at freeway speed.

On a recent 250 mile round trip run on the freeway towing the trailer at 55-65 MPH, I got 11.6 MPG with the AirTabs. It was the first all-freeway run with the trailer. I was only getting 9.5 MPG towing the trailer before the AirTabs.

I should measure this again next trip because I had inflated my trailer tires to 35 PSI, when the specs (in fine print on the tires) actually called for 55 PSI cold!

If I get 0.4 MPG more (12 MPG towing) with the higher air pressure in the tires I'll be very happy.

That's a most impressive gain, Prem! Couple questions....
Where do U get those airtabs, how much R they, & do U think they'd make any
appreciable difference on my little trailer, considering I'll only be pulling it at 50 mph?

Scroll to the middle of the page:

http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=25377&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=45

Should work just fine on any size trailer over 40-45 MPH, maybe even better on a smaller one. The rear dust pattern is now in 18 inches all the way around three sides of the trailer's rear, so there's still an air eddy in the center of the rear of the trailer. Yours with less rear surface area should have very little air eddy, hence very little rear vacuum that kills MPG.

Prem

Actually,'da Pit' was quite a nice spot, with hookups it would be perfect.

Having seen the Featherlite at the DG; it's layout is very open; almost palatial. With the rear and side doors open; makes it appear even roomier.

Almost a
Put in "da pit" without friends and neighbors or hook-ups at the gathering.

It did have a view. But I went for the comraderie, not the lake view. Four or five people I met there thought that space "da pit" wasn't part of the gathering.

At least I cooled down after the bad treatment and didn't just drive 125 miles straight back home.

It's always a pleasure for me to watch Dean cook and then help eat his fabulous food. (Joanie and I diced the Yukon Gold potatoes that went in to this chowder.) Check this out:

Thanx! Based on their price, that'd be about a $100 investment for my little trailer,
so it's gonna be awhile. Too bad, since I'll soon be leaving on a 1600 mile round trip,
where I'd be getting a good return started on the investment. Such is life. :(
