Register Teardrop in CA

I purchased a teardrop in Missouri and tried to register it at AAA, today. The clerk didn't know what type to register. She was flumoxed. She ended up registering as a PTI trailer.

Does anyone know if this is correct and how to correctly register a teardrop in California?

A teardrop qualifies for PTI if it is less than 16 feet long.

PTI is a five year registration versus a 1 year for other trailes.

And the DMV classification is CMP (camp trailer). I've almost given up on AAA, and I won't go into DMV. AAA used to be good when you only delt with one person and they were smart and knew all the tricks. That made it real easy to regerter Hotrods and Vintage trailers (and teardrops). Now you never know who your going to get.

Gage, should it be registered as CMP rather than PTI? She was very confused because the trailer is so small and is only used for sleeping.

Jeanne, I will contact you soon. We had a packed trip. Not enough time, even a snow storm.

Our first weekend trip will be Memorial weekend at Pismo Beach.

CMP is the trailer type.
PTI is a license that can be issued to several small trailers including the CMP trailer. It is the cheapest trailer license in CA

And Sunday we didn't see any and then Monday it rained. It stopped when I finished getting packed up to go home.

You need to get up earlier. By 9:30 I was moving out with just spit-rain starting. That continued off and on until Santa Barbara. All dry the rest of the way home

Thank you for the heads up on the weather. I shouldn't be disappointed.

I have the trailer registered but as a coach. I went back to have them change it at AAA. They wouldn't, even though I had printed out the pages from the DMV website.

They said I would have to go to DMV, after I receive the pink slip, to have it changed.

I recently became a second owner of a teardrop in the state!

It is a home built he had registered it, but misplaced the pink slip!

When went to register it and was able to get the pink slip it is a CMP type/PTI license that good for (5) years!

I need to register ours before the October Texas plates expire...I talked to AAA yesterday and the gentleman said to bring everything down and they'll figure it out....Might start working on it now in case it becomes a long, drawn-out process....thanks to all who provided info and support here!

Pismo Beach had wonderful weather. No moisture and warm.

We had two different experiences with "award winning clam chowder". YUM.

The private RV park we stayed in was not very friendly to campers that were not self-contained. That is, the one bathroom was far from our site and we could not move closer.

I have an appointment at DMV to clear up the title. When I talked to them, they seemed to understand the predicament and will take care of it. I stilll need to take the trailer to the office for inspection.

SUCCESS.

I went to DMV and decided I wasn't going to leave without the PTI registration. The state animal of Missouri is a mule. You can take the girl out of Missouri. But..... Although, I have lived in California longer than anywhere else.

I politely stood fast and persisted after 3 employees told me "No." I left with what I went for, a PTI registration.
