how to install a potty and a shower?

Postby mikeschn » Thu May 13, 2010 6:37 pm

Has anyone ever seen any information on the internet on how to install a potty and a shower onto a gray/black water holding tank?

I imagine the toilet is pretty easy, since it should have a built in trap... but what about the shower?

If I cut a hole in the holding tank for the shower drain, and set the shower pan on the holding tank, there is no trap or anything. How do you keep the odors out of the trailer?

Anyone have any ideas?

Normal set-ups use seperate grey and black water tanks. There are shower pans that contain their own holding tank which after use is drained to the other tank then the valve is closed to prevent the odors.

Mike,

The gray water tank is generally offset from the shower pan.

The shower pan should have a trap under it, and then be routed to the tank.
If you have a kitchen and or bathroom sink, they too would be connected to the drain line before dropping into the tank.

Black water tanks do have the toilet mounted directly over the tank, generally the shallow end, and use a fitting that allows adjustment between the flange on the floor and the tank, as the toilet is not usually "mounted" directly to the tank.

Having the straight drop allows for inserting a cleaning wand into the tank for rinsing.
There is no trap on the toilet, just a blade valve, though the system should be designed with a vent to take odors up and away from the tank so you don't have to hold your nose each time you flush.

Also, most plumb their tanks so the gray water tank is slightly higher than the black water tank, and connect the two with valves, so that after the black water tank is emptied, the gray water tank can "flush" the black water tank.

The picture Miram posted looks like it could be a Thetford cassette toilet, mounted in the shower pan enclosure. If it is, it would eliminate the logistics of plumbing a black water tank. If only I could find the cassette toilet for sale in the US. I have tried and failed to find one available to the consumer.

i am doing away with the black water tank all together. they have composting toilets that look like much better deal then blackwater tanks to deal with.
Natures head is the one im getting.

For long weekend getaways why couldn't a portable porta-potty be placed in a much larger shower pan which will become the floor of the bathroom area. Again no black water tank to deal with.

Perhaps this will help. :D

I've seen the shower pans and toilet mount combo units - you buy the pan and then mount your toilet to it. What is shown surely would be nice to drop in as one unit. I have seen that page before, however I cannot find a link for them - I believe that discussion was earlier about the same set up but no one found a manufacture stateside for em'.

That unit - at least the toilet portion - is made by Thetford. This unit has a cassette for waste disposal that is accessed outside the trailer through a door. You don't have to carry it through the camper. I believe they also have two options for water supply - plumbed or self-fill.

Many others have looked, but haven't found a US distributor. If anyone puts together a list of interested buyers, please sign me up (of course depending upon cost.) I'm interested in this for #2 (a standy.)

My question couldn't you get that unit from like forest river or one of the other manufactures as a replacement unit for a pop up?

Chell is a good hunter... I asked her to start looking for something... I'll let you know if she finds anything...

I've got her looking for the potty with the cassette that comes out of the side of the trailer...

 Maybe just go to the RV salvage place and pick one up. 8) Lots of bleach should make it usable. 8)
