Is it possable to overcharge a battery?

Postby dh » Mon May 17, 2010 9:25 pm

OK, here is a possible situation, lets say I plug the charger up on Thursday morning before work. Friday morning, pack up and drive around 300 miles, charging the entire time from the TV. Camp off grid for one night, run some lights, maybe catch the news on the TV before going to bed, and run a fan all night, hit the road again saturday morning, lets say 150 miles, again, charging from the TV. Hook up at a camp ground that afternoon, and charge the rest of Saturday, all day Sunday, and break camp Monday morning, and tow 400 miles back home, again charging from the TV. Is all that excess charging bad on a battery?

No. Your TV regulator will not allow the battery to be over charged.
Gassing of the battery may be a different issue, but your car won't kill the battery.

It is probably not gonna hurt the battery to charge from the TV. Remember that it charges the vehicle battery all the time. A battery charger can certainly over heat one though. I never charge unless the battery is out of the camper and in a plastic box cause I bubbled one over once.

If you charge from the tow, it will not overcharge the battery. The tow regulator will take care of adjusting the charge rate.

The only way you could do that is with a battery charger in your garage... and there are many that cut off when the bat is fully charged.. not like the old days when you had to turn it off manually.

YES it is possible, in a wet lead acid you can boil the acid, but as pointed out the TV system will not. As inexpensively as smart chargers are I.E. HF a conventional (other than trickle) can over charge the battery so why risk it. Having said that boiling the battery a bit every now and again keeps it from sulphating.

You can only over charge a battery if the charger is not well regulated and produces to much voltage ( ideally it should cut off at about 14 volts).....

This link may help you understand more about batteries...
