Slipper springs or double eye leafs?

Postby Chris00WJ » Sun May 23, 2010 9:49 pm

Im trying to decide on what springs I want to use for my teardrop and I cant seem to find any information on the difference between slipper leaf springs and the double eye springs? Other than the obvious mounting differences that is.

Is one better than the other? My tear will be used on logging roads, but not a ton of CRAZY off-road stuff. Atleast not at any great speeds. If I do decide to do any river crossing type stuff it will be at a bare minimum and as careful as possible.

Slipper springs seem to have lower ratings (lb's) at my local store, but that might just be the store itself.

Anyone have any preferences? If so, why?

I prefer double eye/shackle. Just my preference. To me, slippers look like they could create a lot more problems if left neglected (rub a hole in the frame?) Just my personal thoughts, no real life data to back it up.

Thank you for responding! I was beginning to think I was invisible, haha.

See, thats the thought I had too. Im not too worried about the hole in the frame part, but if for some reason the springs or wheel got caught on something it seems like theoretically it could pop out and be loose.

Maybe Im just paranoid, I dont know. Im going to hit the junkyard tomorrow hopefully and see if I can find some 1 3/4 " leaf springs. I dont mind going used because I can custom tailor the springs to my application by removing leafs. Just needed to know if I wanted slippers or not.

Anyone else have an opinion?

My neighbor has a boat trailer from the '60s, it has a 2 link set up with coil springs and shocks.

For light duty off road I use a standard eye to eye leaf, all on road I use slipper. For serious off road I use eye to eye with a rebound spring(no shockers required) leaf.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
