Exercise Anyone?????????????

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Postby artwebb » Sat May 29, 2010 1:29 am

Did my resistance tonight.
Jeanne did fifteen minutes on the bike, and that's it.
she has been complaining of back pain, and today she went to the ER about it.
The doctor told her no weight training and limited exercise until she sees her regular doctor.
I'm not sure I agree with this entirely. Her back was hurting before we bought this home gym, so that isn't the cause.
I worry because so often doctors are either misinformed or more interested in regular patients than in actualy helping someone.
In fact, there are still doctors who, confronted with an arthritic joint, will imobilize it, (exactly the opposite of what they should do)
This is a disturbing occurance.

my usual cardio routine tonight.
Jeanne did two rides, and did yesterday's resistance tonight, saying her back didn't hurt any worse weather she did it or not, and she tried all the doc's suggestions all day with no relief, but when she did crunches her back popped and is hurting less now.
one thing she will not be doing anymore is ball squats.
she confided in me that she has no confidence in herself and the physio ball, and doing those squats scares the crap out of her, which causes her to tense up. That certainly doesn't help her back, so tonight (after the workout, unfortunately) I showed her how to use the kitchen sink to steady herself during a chair squat.

Yeah I would for many things they suggest rest or imobilization.. when the opposite is best. I would say it is more often an issue of being "misinformed" vs an attempt at getting more work. Not that it makes much difference to the patient.

I have learned to be very pro-active in my own care. Dealing with the medical field.. is where I learned to be fairly assertive.

51.06 miles today.. at 17.9 ave. It was very windy AGAIN!!!.. and the middle of the ride was quite hilly.. and my wife was not totally there today... which all added up to make for a not entirely pleasant ride... :(

although I still would rather have done it than not.. 8)

I don't think I have done more than mid 30's for distance in quite some time either.. so that is a bit of a jump.

I have been looking at a map.. of the area we biked in today.. There is a road called "Level Hill"

I have heard of that one.. but am not sure I have been on it..

but just beyond that is another called "Hostile Valley Rd." :NC :frightened: :NC

Those sound like streets that could be quite challenging, or very disapointing.
No workout for me tonight.

Well we were out on the motorcycle this morning.. and on the way back home I thought I would explore the area we rode in yesterday. We did find Level Hill Rd. It started with a pretty decent climb..and then..... you guessed it.. it leveled off. It was fairly flat for quite a ways.. but then it went back to the normal for the area.. up and down stuff. It was quite a scenic road. Lots of blueberry barrens.. and good distant views. It was be quite a ride from the house.. It is off the road we were on yesterday.. and it goes uphill off the ridge we were on.. which was the high point of that ride.

I could not find Hostile Valley. [I had not originally planned to look for them.. and did not have a map.. or a clear memory of exactly where they were. I did end up going by one end of it.. but the sign had been taken.

No formal exercise today.. but I did work in the woods.. clearing trails.. getting in several miles of walking.. with a commercial leaf blower or trimmer.

Resistance workout tonight, this week we begin two sets per session, instead of one like we were doing.
Jeanne also did one thirty minute ride

Fenlasson, if I may ask, what is your age? I ask because the wife noticed your white hair, but you don't look that old in the face, and of course we're both a bit in awe of your fitness level.

Pretty much beaten down like a dog on Sunday. Did the Comanche loop with a Pardee Climb.

Little wind and Dutch out rode me on a Hybrid. 55 lbs lighter and 17 years younger, pulled a 4 min lead first 10 miles, 8 minutes at 20 miles and and 4 minutes on the last leg. Worked hard on the last leg to stay with him but every time I got within few hundred yards he pulled away.

Out classed and will do it again, minus the climb next week with no stops (30 miles). Can only hope for wind and Dutch returns to his drinking...might stand a chance.

I am 53...I started getting a few grey hairs in High School. hmm.. wondering how old that photo is.. It is taken about a year and a half ago.

I consider my self.. in ok fitness. Some people I bike with.. can't imagine anyone faster.. I tell them they have no idea.

Last winters Ice race.. I entered the B race.. In the A race.. I would have been dropped like a stone. In this case it is not a matter that the A racers were all in there 20's or something like that.. hmm Bill and Alan are older than I am.. Paul is only 6 months younger. Matt who beat me in my race.. is my age.

Last year we had a mountain bike ride from the shop. I could not keep up at all... I stopped going.

I seem to have gotten faster this spring.. so I might do better.. I could not out do them.. but perhaps hang enough.. to stay on the ride...

For some reason Matt beating me last winter better motivated me. :D

I told him he would pay for that.. :D

I am not angry or disapointed.. [well maybe a little disapointed] It has just motivated me to get back into shape... :D and that is a good thing

We have had rain all day.. while it was still quite overcast.. it did stop by ride time. There was only 5 of us vs the 20-30 we usually have.. we had some fast and slow people.. with the weather and the small group..we stayed together.

The air quality was horrible.. there are a bunch of forrest fires over the border in Quebec. 50 of them out of control they said.

This seems to have been the problem with my wife Sunday. It seemed to be worse tonight. We still did 20 miles. I did not notice the ave. There was a few places where I cranked for a half mile or so at a time..

That and and a few of my buddies can hold him down while I strap a 40 pound riding vest on him. I would still have 15 pounds and worn lungs....but I'd call that close match

No exercise today, too hectic.
If 30 mile high speed bike rides at 53 is OK fitness, Me and the wife are pretty pathetic.
 43 and 50 resspectively, and couldn't touch that.
I told Jeanne she had three years yet to reach your ditness level if she wants to be 'that fit at that age'.
She said," NOT!"

Oh, BTW, I noticed you referenced a motorcycle in an earlier post.
Something besides knees we have in common.
