A Pelican Flew Over My House...

Postby caseydog » Thu Jun 03, 2010 8:07 pm

Okay, I'm sitting on my patio, on the plains of North Texas, sipping a Captain Morgan and Coke on my Birthday, and I look up to see a Pelican fly over me.

Is this a good omen?

Is this a bad omen?

Is this an indication I need to give up drinking?

Is this an indication the Pelican should give up drinking?

And yes, it was really a Pelican. I used to live on the Gulf coast (pre-BP) so I know what they look like. I also know what Crane's look like, and this was not a Crane. We do have those here. A freaking pelican.

How did it get here?

Why?

I gotta Google this.

I've seen more than a few sea-gulls around here now that-cha mention it.

Used to see the occasional one near the dump south of Austin, but now that you mention it, it is quite unusual.

There's that one chilling scene in Soylent Green, you know the one. No, not the "it's people", but "the oceans are dead" that kinda brings it home.

Sorry to be a downer, but that is a very sobering thought to me...!

How far are you from the coast? Pelicans can fly as far as 100 miles one way for feeding each day. With what is happening on the coast, they may be getting the heck out of Dodge, or just looking for food not basted in oil.

Maybe Captain Morgan had a Pelican instead of a Parrot???

Hey, it could happen.

I've seen white pelicans here in Utah. I think they migrate through in spring and fall.

You didn't crash your house did you?

I see white pelicans here every so often, seagulls too. We're just about as landlocked as you can get. I did read pr hear somewhere that white pelicans are native to Minnesota and migrate South.

Turns out, pelicans have begun to travel from the Gulf coast all the way to North Texas. As many as 58,000 are estimated to have come this far North in 2010. This is a new thing. Seems the climate is changing, and fish are being killed by new organisms, and birds like pelicans are following the food Northward.

But that's not possible. Climate change is a hoax. It must be the booze.

Gary and I camped in late April one year in Pella Iowa ... and the lake was covered with Pelicans! Seems they migrate through there every spring! Trudy

Arizona immigration law prevents them from migrating through - so they now come through Texas

We also have pelicans here in Manitoba which I have seen at Lake Winnipeg. Our location is very near to the geographical center of N America. There was no rum involved but maybe some BEER.
