in the 10 days or so between HS graduation, and arrival at Paris Island, I was at the beach with some friends and a female cousin [my age]. I was chasing her, with the thought of throwing her in the water. The next thing I knew.. I was flat on my back. She stopped, grabbed, and through me over her shoulder.

It was all so fast, I had no idea what had "hit" me.

No workout for me tonight, Jeanne took off, too.
I have an interesting new book, called 'Outside fitness' about, you guessed it, funtional training. Gonna see what the author has to say that may affect my workouts.

3 tandems tonight.. and none of us have biked a lot in the last week. :( so we just wanted to get on the bikes.. 26 miles.. of exploring.

One road.. I thought was dirt.. Laurie thought it was paved.. had a dirt section in the middle. There was no houses.. not even any power lines.. but it was quite scenic.. and the dirt was actually better than some rough paved roads. We also tried some roads I have rarely been on.

We mostly cruised around.. then the last 8 miles home.. we had brutal headwind.. and we cranked a bit. :D

I was an Air Force brat myself, although it was my Army uncle who started my interest in martial arts after my first experience being jumped by multiple attackers.
Korean war era military hand to hand, a simplified version of Daito-Ryu (hope I spelled that right) Jujitsu.
After that I learned anything I had an opportunity to, eastern, western, or whatever. Wish I'd have kept it up.
Tonight weight training, influenced by my new book.
I narrowed my grip on the chest press to get more triceps into it and make it more like the way you'd actually push something naturally, did the same with pull downs, also doing one set overhand and one set underhand, to bring in biceps more.
Over head press done neutral grip now. Bicep curl and Triceps press down eliminated because you just don't often use those movement often in day to day life, and those muscles are intended by nature to work primarily as 'backup muscles' helping the bigger chest and back muscles do their thing.
Lower body I'm pretty functional already, so Squats, Crunches, and Back extension stay.
Thinking about adding a rotational exercise.
Fenlasson, I'd like to pick your brain regarding Kettle bells sometime, I've been hearing the exercises typical of them are very functional, and can be done with dumbbells if you don't have Kettle bells.
I'm wondering what a well rounded Kettle bell workout would entail, and how much more functional it'd be.

a fun bike ride tonight. This group ride is supposed to leave at 5:30... I work till 5:30.. and have to drive a few miles there. I was at work late.. so most of the riders left without me.. and a few faster riders waited... knowing we could bridge up. Running behind.. rushing to get ready.. and knowing there were rabbits out there to chance.. I took off harder than I prefer.

We caught all of them sooner than I expected.

The first mile or so is slow.. in town. a lot of side streets.. we even have to do a dirt "path" around the back locked gate to the Hospital parking lot. 8 miles into it. we still had a 21.6 ave. It is normally 8 to 10 miles before I am even ready to crank. We still had a fairly windy night. There was a few places..where we rode a little slower... and we still ended with a 21 ave. total distance.. 29 miles.

Matt did not turn his computor on until 5 miles into the ride.. so he by passed the slow parts .. and my semi warm up.. His showed an ave. of high 23..

This Uncle served in 3 different branches.. Army, Marine Corp..and I think Air Force. :? What ever Steph was taught worked.. :D

hmm Kettle bells.. One program I have.... has you do turkish get ups one day.. and swings the next... just altering between them.

I LOVE Turkish Get Ups.... These of course can easily be done with a dumbell. The main difference is the different "stress" on the wrist and forearm. I have seen some do swings with something other than a kettle bell. but I think the kettle bell works much better for those.

In more complex programs.. they do things like bent rows.. and of course they are not really any different.. they have you use a KB.. because in this case.. that is what you have.

some of the exercises like snatches and such.. are done very differently with KB's.

some surfing on youtube will show some of those to give you a better idea.. than any words I could give.

Tonight's workout... we kayaked. for about 2.5 miles. I did not notice how long we were out. It has been about 2 years since I have been in a boat at all.... and some years since we did it regularly.

We were with friends in their tandem race boat. It was a little tippier than ours... but oh so smooth in the water.

Hauled a bit of wood again today.. because of forecasted rain my riding friends bailed.. which was fine for me also. I was debating starting running again tonight.. but it was raining fairly hard.. and my back is pretty sore. so I bailed.. and am just stretching and foam rolling.

Computer probs again.
Jeanne was downloading Internet explorer 8, and clicked 'open' instead of 'run'. Don't ever do that. The computer locked up and she tried, after all else failed, a 'hard' reboot.
Windows would not load after that, so we had to take it to a repair guy.
$150 later, our computer works again, although some functions are still down.
He had to download all our files on another device, re install Windows, then load all our files back on.
Then the system refused to recognize the hard drive.
He gave us a hard drive he had lying around, loaded our files, and we were off.
Had to download a flash player and java myself, and my sound isn't working except for beeps when certain funtions activate, so I'll have to call him about downloading drivers for the sond card I know was in there when I dropped it off.
I'm not going to go into updating our excersice, except to say we've been doing our usual, except Jeanne skipped weights tonight because she's feeling ill.

Friday night we road 25 miles with friends. Overall the average was not fast.. we cranked a couple of places but overall it was a fairly easy ride.

Then this morning we went for another ride. Matt posted a 50 mile ride. Last night he and I mapped out a 57 miler.. and with a few running changes today it turned into 60.

Laurie and I ended up with 65.. occasionally turning back to ride in with the slower riders.

about 3/4's of the way through the ride. I noticed we had an 18.8 average, which was faster than I expected... with the turning around.. and occasionally riding slow.. walking with the bike across parking lots.. all that stuff really hurts your ave.

About 8 miles from our finish.. I decided to see if we could finish with a 19 ave. By then we were fairly tired.. but we made it. :D
