Any pickers out there?
If so, what are your favorite fire side songs?

The wife plays and sings a variety of 60's through present day music just like at home. My favorite is "Don't let the sun catch you crying" by Jerry and the Pacemakers. See her doing it at home here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkkluuwqwnI Watch it in HD if you have the bandwidth.

I need a new Avatar. I'd put my dog up there but she doesn't look much like me. She's the skinny one.

been spending alot of time playing what I can with my dad. He plays harmonicas and guitar but the guitar part is going away as the arthritis and parkinsons takes over. He can play most anything. Ive been learning to play fiddle and my world is a bit smaller. Old joe clark, wreck of the old 97, aaran boat song, soldiers joy and a few others we can do togather..My better half just bought a dulcimer. I think shes gonna have a ball with it, I played a song on it on my first try... very simple..

I was camping with a group about 14-15 years ago and one guy played Guitar at the Campfire.

And man was he a riot.

He sang nothing but comedy songs with "sing along choirs's"

I remember the titles of 2...

Flushed from the Bathroom of your heart

and

She had 9 buttons on her Nighty, but she could only fasten eight.

Happy Trails

Somebody played "Irene Goodnight" at the last jam, and the whole danged crown joined the chorus. I think it would be a great campfire tune.

For picking, I like the old fiddle tunes, some of which were mentioned by hotrod.

some or most of these old songs have almost an uncountable number of verses and can go on and on and on.. pretty cool IF other folks know the words..My folks go to a regular jam session and when its over the entire bunch closes with will the circle be unbroken.

'Round these parts, most of the fiddle tunes are played without vocals. It was a year before I heard any lyrics to Old Joe Clark. I only heard words to Angeline the Baker a few months ago (were they the right words? I have no idea). The vocal tunes like Circle are a completely different challenge for me. Many times, I get to the third verse and draw a blank. I'll hang on that G chord begging for help, until somebody throws me the next line.

My husband Scott with Scott & Joe at the "'09 Midwest Vintage Trailer Rally" in Montello, WI. Scott almost brought the bongos, but decided at the last minute to leave them home. Doh. This year he plans on bringing them.

For those of you who love the old folk songs and also would like to know some of the history behind those songs, the book "Rise Up Singing" (a SingOut! Publication) is da bomb! Of all the songs I've collected for guitar, this book has 1200 songs and the majority of my 500 song collection is totally within the book. I started collecting folk songs in girl scouts and writing them down (I'm 47 now to give you a point of reference).

My only problem with my collection is that my voice has gotten a bit lower and I need to change the key some of the songs are in to be able to sing while I play guitar.

Hugs,

I still like the Steven Foster songs. Probably no longer politically correct, but still great songs......."Someone's in the kitchen with Dinah, Someone;s in the kitchen I kno..oo..oo..wwww"

Fireside Songs

Postby paisano » Tue Jun 15, 2010 4:20 pm

Just an ole bluegrass and old country picker. One good one that gets things rolling is Jambalaya. Gotta have a few copies of the lyrics to pass around then let the fun begin. Just play it in the Key of C as everyone can usually carry a tune there except for me. C & G7 is all you need. I like this one for the grandkiddies since it is only two simple chords.

any tune you can play and get folks to participate is awesome!
What I find a bit suprising is that nobody under 25 years old knows shortnin bread..They dont teach those kinds of songs in school anymore..

My campfire favorites are:

"His Cheeseburger" - Veggie Tales

"A Boy Named Sue" - Johnny Cash

"Space Cowboy" - Steve Miller

"Sweet Home Alabama" - Lynyrd Skynyrd (I know, I know, it is over played...)
