We just got back from a great trip to the Grand Canyon, Painted Desert and Mogollon Rim. We hit a bump somewhere on that trip that put the trailer airborne. I guess when we landed it bent my axle. I built my Weekender on a platfrom from another teardrop. Guess I would have been much better off with a new, custom frame and axle.

As they say, live and learn! I thank God we made it home!

Any landing you can walk away from is a good one, or is that roll away from. Some of those questions about over engineered... Off road is another question. But then bending keeps other things from breaking.

Glad you made it back, the funny thing I was reading threads about the trailers not so lucky about an hour ago.

That same thing happen to me on my first teardrop. The Northern Tool 2000# axle bent on both sides so now I only do 3500# axles.

I'm planning on replacing it with a 3500 lb axle. Just got to find one. 65 to 66" hub face, 49" spring centers. Not sure I can wait for one to ship. Any local suppliers you trust?

Just don't use 3500 lb springs.

I have have a 68" with 53" spring centers. And your size trailer 3500# springs would work fine. My last tear had 3500# springs and road perfect. The new tear has 2000# springs with 3500# axle and can't tell the difference between the two. Of course the new one is much lighter in weight than the old one. Check the trailer guy in Glendale or you can order one from Auto safety House http://www.dexteraxle.com/arizona

You can order spindles and bearing and hubs and have local steel fabrication/machine shop weld it up for you to your dimensions........

Most online trailer suppliers (etrailer - Northern tool- tractor supply co) have the individual parts and fab shop can supply tubing for axle.....

I used a pair of these spindles with some 2x2 inch by 1/4 inch wall square steel tube for my axle...

Here is where I am with the trailer. Upgrading to a 3500 lb axle. This one shouldn't bend on me! Was able to pick up everything at Auto Safety House for $210.52, another $44.00 to weld the spring pads on in the correct location!

That is why I don't buy from them too much $$$$ , But if you need it quick that is the place.

Question:

My new axle came with reddish goo all over the spindle. Should I wipe this off, or leave it and put my synthetic wheelbearing grease on in its place?

Paper towels are cheep. I would wipe it off. - Wayne
