Horns at the World Cup

Postby Kurt (Indiana) » Mon Jun 14, 2010 5:48 pm

How many have been watching the "World Cup" soccer matches.

I grew up playing soccer (couldn't afford "football") but we didn't have the Horns when I played.
It really is an annoying sound. :?
I guess we'll have to put up with it throughout the games. It is pretty annoying on TV so I can't imagine what it sounds like in person.

The matches have been pretty good so far with lots of surprises.

Anyone else watching??

I eat dinner w/ a couple of my car buddies at a local bar and grille on Mondays... tonight the bartender was talking about the very same thing: he was talking about the sound of those damned horns... and how they blare non stop! and that the players can't understand any verbal communication.

:?

Apparently it's a crowd "tradition" in many countries which is why it's not outlawed.

I've heard the spinnernut stories... or have I?

I lived in the UK & Greece for a while (a few years). I've attended many of the football matches. In fact, my wife and I attended one of the Eurocup games (Greece eventually won the Eurocup in 2004).

The first game I attended was a Manchester United game. The horns leave one deaf for about 1.5 days. The most concerning part for me, at first, was all of the jumping up and down because I could feel the entire structure of the stadium flexing under everyone's weight. You get used to it. Take earplugs and scream your brains out. It is a blast. Plus, it is my favorite sport.

According to the AP (associated Press) this is a South African thing and they are not about to try and stop it despite complaints from around the world.

I've heard lots of complaints from friends who were trying to watch it. I've read that FIFA will not stop them from using them because it is a South African tradition. I'll bet that South Africa will NEVER host a World Cup after this. Or any other international event for that matter.

I agree - very irritating!

There's a good reason the MLS banned these!

You'd think there would be a conversation like:

"Hey, let's have the world cup in South Africa in 2010"

"Naw I get headaches from those horns of theirs."

"Oh, that's right. How about someplace civil like Scotland or England?"

You should try being over here, the England match last night was followed by the drunken louts leaving the pub playing the vuvuzela horns.
The commentry on the radio was a waste of time, all you could here was the horns.

In case you haven't heard them, here they all. All Horns... All the time...
http://www.vuvuzela.fm/ Maybe that is the ref's excuse for calling back that goal yesterday, he was demented by the horns. :? There ain't no other excuse. Yup, some of us love the game! ;)

Now that the USA is out of the World Cup, are you still watching?

If so, who are you routing for?

I work for a Japanese company and regularly have to deal with "visitors" from Japan, it puts a perspective on our culture, and how other cultures view us. I am amazed at how many people are quick to judge a man's intelligence based on how well he speaks english. BTW calling a country uncivalived because of thier customs is very offensive.
