Aluminum siding

Postby whiteheadfisher » Tue Jun 22, 2010 5:54 pm

Has anyone ever used aluminum flashing as a layered siding on a tear? I'm considering layering it from top to bottom and attaching it with stainless steel screws and adhesive to get an Airstream kind of look.

2 considerations:

1) I think aluminum flashing is ‘dead-soft’ this means that it is extremely malleable and will dent VERY easily. They make it that way so it will conform to various roof contours, valley angles and whatnot.

2) It’s also pretty thin, if I’m remembering right

So, since one and two above, it may not take too long before it might look a little beat-up. If you hunt around you should be able to find some 5052 T-32 or T34, which is a consumer-grade aluminum that is pretty available and has decent strength. The cost isn’t probably as low as the flashing, but will take less labor to install and will be, I would think, much more durable (and so money well spent). You could put a lot of time and a fir amount into the flashing only to have to rip it off and put the more robust stuff on there anyway.

I believe that is what Len Dadonna uses for his creased and interlocked skins on his Scotty creations

Yep, I use it all the time.

It has to be used with the creases in it though. If not...if laid flat it'll get all wavy.

seems like it would ding -- how does it hold up? What's the thinkness (just out of curiosity)?

Anything will ding if ya hit it.

I've done about 6 entire trailers with it and a lot of repair pieces over the past 4-5 years

Really haven't had any problems with it.

Not really sure of the thickness, its just every day run of the mill Brake metal that's used for capping windows & trim.

2'X50' roll, about $80 at Home Depot.

Used it over 3/8 ply for the roof on "The Barn"

I started at the bottom and worked up just like shingles.

Just one item I'd like to add on my using Brake Metal for siding.

We're in the middle of our second heat wave of the season.

In the middle of the day, the siding does start "crackling" and expanding a bit...you can see the "rolls" on the siding getting a bit more pronounced.

But only in excessive heat & sun light.

As soon as the temp goes down everything goes back to normal.

But then under the same conditions I have heard and seen Manufactured Trailers with Aluminum siding do the same.

When your out on an RV lot in the heat with 60 or 70 trailers all around it sounds like a building getting ready to fall over.

Happy Trails
