Making a frame after the cabin is built?

Anyone ever do it? I'm thinking of doing a winter build and my garage has super low ceilings Being space is always a premium I'm thinking of building the trailer and then making a custom frame to fit it in the spring. Bad idea or???

That's what I'm doing on my little build, I'm building it to fit a HF trailer that I haven't gotten yet. It's up on tiny saw horses in the corner right now.

I built my walls and floor and stacked them on a cart. When it came time for assembly, I made a dolly using 2x4s and 4" casters, and then built the teardrop shell on the dolly.

As long as you know what the size of the trailer is going to be, and the wheel location... It should work.

I tried to do that once, and the wheel location was off... so it didn't work.

If he does a custom trailer after the cabin is built, he shouldn't have that problem.

Also, if his cabin does not extend over the wheels, there's no issue with wheel placement.

As you can see in the pic, all my campers are built before the frame is slid under. I use a ladder and step up inside and build Steve Fredericks method, cabinets and all. Actually this pic is after we dropped it down from dead level 36" saw horses. I build my units high as I have back issues, then lower them down to jack stands as I near completion, then after exact measurements, have the frames welded, then back them underneath. Works for us.

Thanks guys. This looks like the best route for me to go. Now to decide if I keep the wheels inside the camper body or have them outside. Plan is to do a weekender type body 6' wide.

I did it that way for a couple reasons. First, I figured that if it didn't work out, I could abort the project without a lot of money lost. Second, it gave me a lot more room in the garage. An added benefit was getting in/out and working on the roof was much easier.
