Check out this parking system

In NYC this would cost about $2000/ hour (once it's built).

This ain't one of them "Green Jobs" thingys is it??

Cool idea but it would be cost prohibitive for most places. And I would hate for it to break down while my car is inside.

Another neat "euro" mechanical system. I love this stuff...

Wouldn't work here, though. American driver education is severly lacking compared to European driver ed... and as a result there are many people in this country who somehow posess driver licenses who would bring the Wohr Parking System to a grinding halt due to their stupidity... by crashiing into something or not being able to "satisfy" the laser-guided parking pallet monitors with correct postitioning of their vehicles.

Around here lately it seems as if a lot of people have gotten their drivers license as a prize in a cracker jack box.

Man I'm seeing some of the same here in Sacramento. I dread driving on the street leading to one of our customers for that very reason. Very poor quality of drivers there.

Right on. Everyone seems to be in a hurry, and I always seem to be in their way.. and they let me know it.

I think they want to keep the old atmosphere of their city, which I applaud, in the new age of everyone wants to drive every where.

If you look on the web, you'll see quite a few examples of Japanese automated parking garages where the cars are stored on a sort of vertical conveyor - like a 'pater noster' elevator, if you have those in the US.

Here in Yurp, we are just at the start of a (actually quite useful, I suspect) craze for self-parking cars tht's been going for a while in Japan - the car can detect a parallel-park space that's large enough to fit in and then steer themselves into it - the driver just controls the forward and back motion. Here's a video from a proud new owner:

That Woehr car park won't make sense to anyone who grew up in Texas, since we have all kinds of room for parking lots. But, a New Yorker will get it.

It makes perfect sense for older European cities, where there just isn't enough open space to build up, so you build down.

BTW, Andrew, parellel parking is really quite easy, but people freak out when they are forced to do it.

Here's how you do it in an Audi...

Yep, done it probably every day of my adult life - but I suspect you are talking about US parallel parking which in my experience (from 20-30 years ago) is easy - loads of space and no need to be very accurate. Yurpeen parallel parking is different - I consider 2 feet more than my car sufficient length to park in and often I want the car within 4 inches of the curb to avoid my mirrors being knocked off. Achieving that in a car with near-zero rear vision ain't easy - I thought the standard rear distance sensors were a bit silly until I got used to using them. Mirrors that auto-fold when you turn off the ignition are becoming common over here, to avoid the knocked mirror syndrome. And this isn't Italy, where they are really short of road space.... :NC

What happens when somebody stays in thier car, they would have all the time they wanted, with no witnesses, to break into all those cars and take whatever they wanted.

I think the "poor" drivers must be everywhere.. I've lived in several areas of the US and visited many in my land travels. Here in Indiana, if you see someone with their turn signal on....don't believe it!! Just wait until they go by.
